When you had an H20 replaced, or any failing receiver for that matter, did you have to pay a delivery and handling fee? Thanks.

Replacements are shipped free if you have the PP, without it shipping is $20. Of course YMMV.

Back in Nov '08, my H20-600 stopped working. Called D and at first, they had to schedule a service call that would take 3 weeks! Called back again and talked with tech service and persuaded them to send a replacement--got an H20-100 two days later; no charge for anything and I do not have the protection plan, although the first D contact did put it on my account which I canceled after talking through setting up the replacement receiver on my account with D. The H20-100 has been working flawlessly since then. Of course, my H20-600 worked flawlessly for 3 years then quit.

I have an H20-600 that gets really really hot on top. I am kind of afraid it will burn my 3 year old son if he touches it (although I doubt it will really burn him, just don't like that it gets so hot). Before this latest CE, it had a problem with putting some sort of noise on the screen that could be seen clearly on a black image. That has been cleared up with the newest CE. I really really want this H20 replaced with an H21 or higher receiver that has the network jack on it so I can do MRV from my HR20. Do you think its possible to get them to send me one of those if I called in with a problem? Or, what do you think I need to do to be able to get it switched out with a better unit?

Why not just order one from your D* on line account?

Because I do not want this H20-600 and I do not want nor do I have the money to spend on another box at the moment.

I want to get rid of this obviously (in my mind cause its so hot) crappy box and get a receiver that:
a) does the things I want it to do
and
b) does not get so darned hot.

I really don't think this program is still going. I think that person just got real lucky and got his replaced. I talked to them about it back about 2 months ago to see if they were still being recalled and was told no. In any case I am not sure I want to try to get it replaced as part of the recall program anyway because I would more than likely just get another H20 as a replacement. I just really want a H21 or better so I can do MRV. But, all in all, it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I am more than likely going to have to suck it up and save up some money to buy a new receiver from Nice Try or something.

They are not being recalled per se. They are just not being proactively recalled anymore. They will get replaced thru that same recall process (free shipping, no commitment) once they fail. They are known to overheat, I think it was faulty circuitry on the mobo- which would normally first cause issues with signal reception or the access card (since the card would get a little crispy inside). A receiver that's hot to the touch though would most likely still be considered "failed" by the technical CSR.

But, would that be enough to get a different model receiver? Or would I more than likely get the same thing, just refurbished?

Delivery & handling charges can depend on a few different factors. Generally speaking, with protection plan its normally always free, or if you sign up for protection plan at the time of the replacement. Recalls should also be $0 shipping, as well as any leased receiver "in warranty"- which should be within 90 days of activation.

No, but I had to keep all my proof that the returned receiver was in fact returned and then call them to remove the $450 non-returned receiver fee.

When they replaced mine, I made sure to tell them that I didn't need OTA channels. They sent me an H21-100.

People here have gotten a mix of all receivers. I've personally been in your shoes and 2 months ago I got the csr to give me a replacement for my h20-600 without fee. I got another h20-600 however. At the time, I also had the hundred dollar off loyal customer pricing on receivers so I ordered a couple of HR2X's and another H2X which ended up being 2 HR22's and an H21-200. My thinking was because it was "free" I could return the H20-600 if I wanted to, but I ended up keeping both.

How do you know if you get that "hundred dollar off loyal customer pricing"?

Well, called DirecTV about the H20-600 and its running as hot as it does. Took quite some time and a lot of half-arguing with the girl to get them to send me a different "type" of receiver. I don't know exactly what that means, but I told her that I didn't need the OTA portion on a new receiver, so an H21, H22, or H23 would work just fine. I just really really hope I don't get an H20-100 and I don't know what other kind of HD receivers they have that they can send out. Don't suppose I can reject that receiver if its an H20-100 if I want a specific model receiver, can I?

Anyway, she kept saying that since its an HD box, its going to run hot, so I said "well, with that reasoning, my HR20-700 in the Living Room should be just as hot as the H20-600, right? Because it's not, its cool to the touch." She started asking about crap like proper ventilation around the unit and such, but I guess in the end I wore her down. I kept saying how in the past it was a known problem that was subjecting the boxes to a recall (which she argued a little) and she said that a software update might have been downloaded to resolve the overheating issue (when in reality its just as hot as it has ever been which, in my opinion, is WAY too hot). I stressed like 5 or 6 times that I was just looking out for the safety of my 3-year-old son. I told her that my hand is a little tougher cause of age and if its really hot to my touch, it's bound to burn him when he touches it.

At first she wanted to schedule a tech to come out to look at it cause I happened to mention something about lines in dark scenes, but I told her I had no interest in messing with a tech (and the fee that is sure to come with it). I just hate how you have to fight and fight with service providers to do what you want. I mean, I am paying $95 a month for this service, I don't see why they can't give me exactly the receiver I want when I ask for it. It's not like they aren't going to get the cost back from me in a month anyway. And along those lines, I don't see why I can't get an SD DVR for my sons room for free from them. Again, its $99 and I pay $95 a month on my bill. It's not like they aren't going to get that money back from me anyway. They are just way way too stingy when it comes to the equipment.

Anyway, end of long story.

Still waiting for Travel HD
Oh, just wanted to say, if you can stand AT&T U-Verse picture quality, they have Travel HD. Even with the not-as-good-as-DirecTV picture quality, it was still fantastic looking. Not real sure why they don't have that yet.

Anyway, back on topic.

Dtv just simply doesn't have the organization to guarantee a specific receiver so it is unlikely that any suggestions or requests will guarantee the box you want. As for travel hd , that's not enough to get me to leave dtv as I am very very happy with the boxes and ui

When they say "different type" of receiver, I suppose that could mean an H20-100, huh? I just figured when they say type, and I say I don't need OTA, that would mean they would want to send out a box without OTA in it cause its cheaper for them. Oh well, I guess I will see when either I get the box, or the website updates to show what they are shipping to me.

I currently have a H20 (that's working just fine and I'm not using for over the air reception) as well as 3 HD-DVRs and I want to replace the H20 receiver with a H21 so that it will be ready to run the multi-room viewing (MRV) update that is expected in a national FW release in 2nd half of 2009. MRV relies on having the DVRs and receivers networked via ethernet and the H20 doesn't support this. I certainly would not want request Directv swap out my current H20, just to get anther H20.

Does anyone know if there is a fool proof way to get Directv to guarantee they will provide a H21 as the replacement unit?

Lacking that I assume I could upgrade to a HD-DVR (which all have the required Ethernet port). Does anyone know how much Directv charges to upgrade from an HD receiver to a HD-DVR?

The H20-600 recall is still ongoing. My parents two H20's failed just before Easter (access cards melted). When I called D* for them, I explained that I was aware of D*'s recalling the H20-600. The CSR looked up the RID & access card number, and verified both receivers were on the recall list. She then transferred me to tech services, who had to authorize the recall at no charge and no commitment. When I asked for a H21, the CSR (Tech services) could not guarantee a specific receiver, other than it would be a refurb H20. He said, " if you wanted a specific receiver than you have to replace the receiver on your own." Since both receivers were owned (my father despises leases), the swap was the way to go. To answer your questions.

To my knowledge there is no way to get D* to commit to a specific receiver, unless you purchase it yourself.

I would call D* and find out your options. Depending on your account, you may or may not have some available credits to apply towards equipment. It never hurts to ask for what you want. Typically most D* CSR's will work with you.

No foolproof way. And any CSR guaranteeing you one is just clueless or misleading.

There's no guarantee that DirecTV will credit you some cash for upgrade, but they usually will do something that'll end up costing you about 100 bucks.

I got lucky when I ordered my last H2X receiver, but again, I had the Loyal customer special on my "Add Receiver's" page, so it didn't cost me anything to try.

Quick question, since I talked to DirecTV yesterday afternoon about the swapping of the receiver, shouldn't I see something on their site by now in the "Pending Orders" section or something? WhenI click on pending and completed, they both show nothing there. I am wondering if they really are sending me anything.

I wouldn't worry about it yet.

Can't do trades as the leases have to go back to D*. I'd just keep checking your account every few days for the loyal customer discount and jump at another HR when it came.

You can get a box that is listed as owned from another user though. And, I would think, if you want to give a leased box to another user, you could call DirecTV up and get it transferred. At least that would make sense to me.
