View Full Version : WOW I LIKE that audio!
well I was making a list of all the 5.1 channels and was surprised at one of the entries. Somebody must have a fetish for Contemporary instrumentals, but WOW is that ever sharp in DD. Sure it's only DD-2.0, but the channel is clean enough to hear a beau moving in mid-air without musicam artifacts. If you're trying to sell on the crispness of Dish Network's audio, use this 384k stream and ensure a purely digital path if possible. Make your customers listen on headphones and put them in a quiet room. It scores a 15 on the 1 to 10 scale where musicam at 192 gets a 10. The full spectrum is represented, I just can't say enough about this. E* should consider switching to something that is more accoustical, like new age or something that isn't a poor man's jazz. Switch it to something that really accentuates the extra bandwidth. And while you're at it, consider adding some more DD audio channels, as well as a 5.1 that specializes in music designed for a 5.1 setting.

Huh? Which channel numbers are you looking at? My channel 970 isn't DD.

I just ran all of the music channels through my Denon 4802 and not one of them is in Dolby Digital. The Pro-Logic II comes on with the stereo feed however. Actually Pro II came on with the mono feed as well but it hit the center channel only. The stereo feeds go to all 5 channels, plus the sub.

the audio is a mirror of 970. Look at the end of the channel list.

OK, the end of my channel list is 9900 (which says Congratulations You Have A Dish 500 System). The music on that channel does not mirror 970 and is not in Dolby digital. What channel number are you talking about? Are you looking at 61.5? Maybe this channel is not on 148.

Fine, I looked at the channels on 148 by way of Lyngsat. I get the BTV's but not the Specials on the 9900 channels. I'm going to guess that I'm not turned on for that so I'm gonna say bye bye. A channel number would have been one hell of a lot easier that transponder number......

The PPV channels with DD play instrumental music when they are "Off Air" in the wee hours but they aren't on 148. That leaves the HDTV channels as the only source of DD from 148. None of the channels in the 900 range are DD.

That's what I was thinking too Charles, but Jhall said DD2.0, the instrumental music on the DD PPV channels are in 5.0, maybe 4.0.
I didn't post the number because I wanted the signal to stay around. no matter, it is 9982 and you'll need an FTA receiver to pull off the DD stream.

So, let me see, you need an FTA receiver to get the DD stream. Isn't an FTA receiver a C-band receiver? How many of us here use C-band to receive DishNetwork? What a waste of my time, and probably yours.

An FTA receiver can operate with C, Ku, NA-DBS;
basically any satellite broadcast downlink band.
The LNB/LNBF downconverts to L-band frequencies,
which are then input to the receiver.
C-band broadcasts get frequency-inverted when
they are downconverted by the LNB. An FTA
receiver has an option for this, as well as for the
symbol rate, FEC, etc.
So why would this be a waste of time?
Because the original post would lead anybody to believe that the signal could be received using standard Dish Network equipment. If the dude wanted to keep it a secret, then freakin' don't post!

It's yet another reason to get a good FTA receiver,
and to use it to check out Echostar and ExpressVu
FTA signals on the DBS band.

lol :)
jhall - you are "making waves" again? (just kiddin') :)
An FTA receiver hooks up the same way a DISH Network receivr does, except you cannot use the SWs. You either hook firectly to the LNBF or use a DiSEqC switch.
If I were to get an FTA receiver, can it be connected to a Dish 300 antenna? Is there a list of channels that can be received FTA? As a subscriber to AEP on E*, is there really any point? I'd be interested, at a hobby level, but what can I get w/o a BUD?

What you can get FTA on DBS:
One of the ExpressVu barker channels often has newscasts from across Canada (when it isn't hawking WWE PPV).
Just about all of the shopping channels on DISH are FTA all the
time (no surprise or excitement here).
TV Japan on DISH (61.5 and 148) is sometimes FTA, and even offers an English language
alternate audio (select Japanese!).
Freeviews on DISH are FTA; for example HBO/Cinemax this
weekend, Polish channels last week, etc.
Angel One on DISH (channel 262) is FTA. PI channels may be
FTA.
Audio on DISH, AFAIK, is (almost?) never encrypted, and should
be available FTA. I don't know for sure firsthand, but I suspect
this may mean you can listen to distant locals beamed into your
area (CONUS or spot). No picture, though, unless you can
subscribe.
