View Full Version : Did I Get Hosed?

I recently had an issue with my receiver (HR 21 DVR) that was constantly freezing. After numerous call that wore out the reset button, they finally sent me a new receiver. This new receiver (re-furbished HR 21) failed to work as well. After 3 plus hours on the phone they escalated to a case manager and sent a service call. Service call replaced the HR 21 with a re-furbished HR 20 and everything seems to be working fine. My questions are:
What are the differences in the receiver types?
Is the recording size different?
Any pluses of minuses to either type?
DID I GET HOSED?
Thanks,
Marty

You're in the wrong group!
This is the Dish Network group, NOT DirecTV.
IMHO, the only downside on the HR20 is that the harddrive is a bit smaller then the other HR2X's. On the plus side you got two ATSC/OTA tuners built in plus the HR20's usually are faster in the GUI area then the other HR2X's.

You would be better off breaking away from the dark side and get a real DVR.:p
Most would agree that the HR20 is actually a win over an HR21.

Yes, you did get hosed. More hosed than anyone has ever been hosed before. I say dump the bastards and change providers! I hear Dish has a pretty good DVR!!! ;) :D

HR21 and HR20 have the same size hard drive. Basically the only difference between the 2 is the HR20 has a built in OTA tuner, if you use an antenna to get your local channels. Course, this can be remedied on the rest of the HR2x with the AM21.

I'm going to move this to the DirecTV forum.. A mod there can determine if it needs to be merged (if there's a duplicate thread) or closed.
Welcome to what ImBack234 refers to as "The Dark Side".
The HR20 is a great DVR, and most people would not feel that you got hosed.
Sorry it took so long to resolve the problem, but glad it did get resolved. Enjoy your HR20, and feel free to peruse the various DirecTV forums here, including the CE forum (which you must be a DBSTalk member to access).

Nope you won actually.

Course, this can be remedied on the rest of the HR2x with the AM21.Actually, some 20's have a 300 G, while most 20's and I think all 21's have a 320, which is, what, a couple hours of HD?
Those of you who have "heard" that DISH has a good DVR are about to hear from me that it's a POS. I tried to talk my mother out of it, but she went DISH for a couple months, before going back to cable (no line of sight for DTV). What a pig that DVR was.

When the new HD DirecTivo becomes available, that will be the HDDVR to compare to the ViPs.Comparing the ViPs to DirecTV's HRxx series is like trying to compare DirecTV's HR10-250 to Dish's 921.;):eek2:
Well, I think you'll find that the majority of us here who have used both the HR-series DVRs from DirecTV and the VIP-series from Dish Network generally prefer Dish's offerings. You'll find some folks that prefer D*, but they are in the minority.
I used the VIP 722 with E* and I currently have an HR-22 from D*. I prefer the 722, but find the HR-22 to be adequate.:eek2:
SD or HD Picture Quality, will be very good on both, it will be hard to really tell the diffierence. Direct has more HD, and over all Better sports packages. As for DVR's just read the Forums and reviews and problems. Dish win's hands down, even from users who switched over for the HD channels they wanted that Direct had over Dish, and didn't care for the HD channels Dish has that Direct doesn't have. DLB, Guide, Autotune, Channels I Get, are all Features have that Direct doesn't have, or work correctly on the HR2x.
HR2x has come a LONG ways from its Very buggy past, but still doesn't compare to the ViP Series yet.:eek2:
I couldn't say it any better. :D

I have both an HR20 and HR21. They are both functionally the same. The HR21 looks nice in black. But I have had no trouble with either one. The HR21 does go thru the menu's and guide a bit slower, but that is about it. I would say that you did not get hosed. At least you have a working DVR, that is a win.
BTW, with all the improvements that D* keeps making to HR** series, it has got to be one of the best DVR's on the market.

I agree...I have had a better HD DVR from another provider, speedwise and software wise, but DTV HD DVR isn't far behind.

There are a lot of differences between the 20s and the 21s. If he got a 20-700 that works, he got the best HR.

The HR20-700 would be a win. The 20-100 is crap, just my opinion.

Hey...that's what I got(HR20-100) :( I've only had it a couple of weeks and I do notice that it is sluggish with the remote and takes like 5 minutes to boot up.

I've never had a new 20-100. I've had many replacement 20-100s. Most of them were in such bad shape that I never got them activated. Multitude of different reasons. A few wouldn't even come on, one had a bad power port, the plug kept falling out and the list goes on. I had one that wouldn't accept any remote signals. Tried for hours to get the remotes working and failed every time. The list of things goes on. But I've never had a brand new one.
But, I did purchase a 22-100 a couple of months ago. And it worked and I was shocked. Now it is unusable for sports. All you have to do is touch the 30 second slip button at times and it goes to the end of the recording. Nothing like settling down to watch a game and you slip over the first commercials and the damn thing goes right to the end, and there is the score. I know this, well I believe this: It's not the software, I have eight other HRs that don't do this. Logic would tell me that the software cannot be at fault, unless you look at it as "software on that 22-100". That might be true.
Aside from that, (and that is huge for me) I have had no other problems with it. But if I can't record sports on an HR, what is the use of having it?
What I've always found odd is that the 20-700s are the best HRs and the other 20 is the worst. Just an opinion, I don't want to start a war.

Thanks for the responses. Everything seems to working fine now. I did though receive an HR 20-100. Fingers are crossed.

HR20-100 is a good receiver, seems to be better built than all the ones that came afterwards.
