View Full Version : My SWM install (pics)
This was for an existing customer through the mover's connection.
Directv showed up and told me they needed more lines; I told them we wanted a SWM. They said no, but eventually we were able to get them to give us the SWM module, but I had to install it for my customer.
After looking at the pics, I realize these loops are wrong. whoops; i'll have to fix that. The ground is there, but I guess I didn't get a pic of that.
Here are the pics (directv installer put the dish up; we took it from there.

Except for one or two every single connection at the SWM splitter, the points of entry and ground block are not weatherized.
They need to come from below, right now any and all moisture flows right into the fittings.
Also from the looks of it you have enough wire at the dish to connect it straight to the LNB. Remove that barrel at the dish.

I noted that in the OP.

As noted, dish was installed by directv. I have nothing to do with that part.

ive never seen anyone make 7 individual holes in your house for 7 wires like that. I would have drilled 1 - 1 inch hole and they all would have been thru 1 hole. plus your drip loops as you already noted. other than that looks ok.

What I don't understand is why you drilled that many holed to begin with. It should have went as follows:
1 line from the dish's SWM LNB to a ground block.
Out of the ground block stright into the house with 1 wire requiring only 1 hole.
Inside the house you chould have not only installed the power inserter, but the 8 port swm switch/splitter as well.
*Not only would the above been more astetically pleasing, it would have also taken weatherproofing the switch out of the equation; which is always the best avenue.
as for installing the switch inside, that is something i asked the directv installer about. he said it had to be outside. i was attempting to make an effort to follow his guidelines. i asked if we could sign something relieving him of responsibility for QC purposes; he told me it would make things easier for him to try and stay within their guidelines. i would've rather had everything inside or at least in the crawlspace.
as for the holes, it was purely aesthetic using the grommets instead of one large hole in the siding.
i've got to meet the directv installer tomorrow; the customer ordered 5 new HD receivers and he is coming to activate them.
i've got to re-route those loops; i hope i don't have to cut them and redo the fittings on the end, but we'll see.
i'll post another pic once i'm done.
i do have a question though;
initially, we couldn't get any signal once everything was hooked up. the installer told me to go to the SWM module from the side of the dual cable without writing on it. i double checked at the LNB, and he was indeed connected to the line w/o writing, but when i toned it out at the block, it was on the side with writing. i thought that was a little odd.
i was just happy that they gave us the SWM module. i had called earlier and directv told us we could not get it from them because it was an existing customer. i planned on ordering it, but didn't know they were coming that day until the HO called me. he pushed things ahead of schedule by several days. the installer called directv again and they said once more we could not have it, but eventually we were able to work it out.

Nothing to do with the install, but why is the TV so freakin high? I see people put their tvs up like that and it always makes me wonder how they can stand to watch it at such a strange angle. Kinda like above a fireplace . Shouldn't your eye level be closer to the middle of the screen to get proper viewing anlgle?

It was the HO's choice.
They've gone with that height in the past couple of homes.
You can't tell from the picture, but the area around it is pretty open. I think they want it high enough so it can be viewed well throughout the space.
The seating is several feet away also.
I like the in wall L,R and center speakers.
