I live in Northern NJ (Essex County) and I'm strongly considering dumping Comast and going with DirectTV. One of my concerns is whether, using an HDTV receiver and OTA antenna I will be able to get good reception on OTA HDTV local stations, since some of these are not carried by D*.
Can anyone out there share their experiences, if they're in or around the same area?
Thanks.
How many HDTV stations from New York are you getting? I thought most(except cbs) lost their HDTV transmitters on sept 11th and hadn't been replaced yet. I thought all the stations just signed a deal to put them on top of the new world trade center in a few deals.

I guess I should clarify. Using Comcast right now, I get through Comcast HDTV ABC, NBC, PBS, HBO and Showtime only.
If I make the move to DirectTV, I'll have to get my ABC, NBC and PBS feeds through OTA (at least for now, until Direct offers that as well). If I make the move, I'd like to know ahead of time if I have a decent chance of pulling in a good OTA HD signal for ABC, CBS, and other local stations.
I understand that CBS is transmitting right now, and PBS, WPIX, and maybe others. Just wanted to know how easy it was to pull in HD signals. But I see what you're saying. Right now, there is no OTA counterpart in my area for ABC and CBS.

I'm in Bergen county (Teaneck), and the only viewable stations I get using an indoor RS antenna in the attic are CBS (90%) and FOX (80%). UPN comes in as a FOX subchannel but the quality sucks.
YMMV.
I really dont know if you should dump them just yet (trust me I hate'em), they do have the best HD pkg out there. More HD channels for less, and you dont even have to pay for the hardware. All without a commitment, sounds like they stole a page from the Sats and one up them...
And now to add insult to injury we'll not only have to pay for our HD hardware but even more for the content.

In Essex County you should still be able to get the Philly HDTV signals, even though you're just outside of the Philly market.
Here in Monmouth County the Philly stations (HDTV & standard) come in much better than anything out of New York City.
Philly's NBC10 even shows Newark NJ on thier weather maps and sometimes covers major stories there, so thier signal should make it there.
