View Full Version : DVR disabling internet. . .

I installed a network in a house w/ directv DVR's.

The customer had us connect the HD DVR's for 'on-demand' functionality.

I do not know the model numbers, sorry, but one was silver and the other was black. The black one had two ethernet connections (can anyone tell me why?) and the silver had one.

We connected two cables to the black DVR and everything was groovy, but upon connecting the silver DVR, it too down the network.

I verified all of the cabling, and the cables to the DVR. They are fine. Even tried a different cable and port.

We had to leave it unhooked.

Something else that I thought was funny; with an ethernet cable connected to the silver DVR, but not connected to the router, the lights on the back of the ethernet port were on.

Cany anyone tell me what may have been happening within this receiver? I had something similar happen with my Dish Network receiver awhile back but it only severly slowed my connection; it didn't completely take it down.

I did no troubleshooting within the receiver as that is not my area.

Could be a defective Ethernet port on the receiver. And that isn't something that's likely to be checked by the "remanufacturer."

Defective port is my first thought because of the lights being on w/ no connection to the network.

But I don't know anything about these receivers.

That second port on the black one is connected to an internal switch so that the connection can be daisy-chained to another device. The silver HR20-100s have two ports, but the second one on those is non-functional (the HR20-700s have only one port).

If a connection is important to your customer, they probably would qualify for a replacement.

well that's pretty convenient.

brant,
If you need other information about any of the equipment, here is a link to the First Look thread. This thread has all the hardware by model number and everything you ever wanted to know about the hardware.

Hooking two cables to the black HR2x to a router or a switch is NOT a supported option, that would create a loop in the network. As bobnielsen mentioned it is switch fabric and can be used to daisy chain connections. You could run one cable from the router to the black unit and then from the black unit to the silver unit. That would be an efficient use of the connections. It is possible that if the connection was done as stated in your first post, the loop could have caused a problem with the internet connection.

Thanks for the link.

I think that may very well be the problem.
