View Full Version : Hope (Channel 368) is not MPEG4

Just got the word that Hope (Channel 368) is being broadcast in MPEG4. I believe that it is an SD channel vs. an HD channel, but it requires MPEG4 capable equipment.
There were questions as to why some people could view it and others couldn't. This is part of the reason. Additionally, the channel is either on Satellite 110° or 119°. I'm not sure which one, actually. So this requires that you have a 5-LNB system to view it. If you have a Slimline-3 setup, you will not be able to view channel 368 on your system. A Slimline-5 (standard or SWM) is required for viewing this channel.
Edit: As it turns out, this channel is on 119° and is in fact MPEG2 ..

I knew it! I got slammed for suggesting it was in MPEG4. ;)
Thanks for the update, it will help me troubleshoot friends and family.
Basically need a Slimline 5 dish and an MPEG4 receiver.
That is a weird combo though, MPEG4 on 110 or 119. Could be a first test for an eventual move of all SD to MPEG4 down the road (way down the road but still).
very interesting. very interesting indeed.
the world as we knew it is changing ... :)

I find it interesting that D* put it on 110/119, with all of the SL3 installs they're doing now. Why not MPEG4 from 101?
Interesting.
A lot of people have been speculating that we would see non-core programing from 110/119 in the space made available by turning off the old mpeg2 hd channels. I suspected that the new channels would be mpeg4 so that doesn't surprise me.
The only thing that really is surprising is that this is apparently considered non-core programing but is still included in the Choice or better plan. I expected the international channels as the likely candidate for this.

It does explain all the issues people were having. :)

This certainly expands the view of "non-core".
Personally, I like it. The more "non-core" content on 110/119, the better. It allows the 101 slot to stay focused on the good stuff. And the simple fix is just to get a dish with 110/119 access.
It does seem like this can get very confusing but maybe they just add a new asterisk ("*") to the channel charts for "*110/119 required". :)
Or maybe this is just a temporary condition.

I can't get it with my R22s or HR22s and my Slimline III

It does make you wonder at the reasoning behind installing the Slimline-3 dish in the field whilst adding new programming on the satellites it can't see.

They're required to carry 4% PI channels.

Yep, you need a Slimline 5. Slimline 3 doesn't see 110 or 119.

Not that I care about this channel but if they add 1 I would be interested in I need a new dish.... Shheeeeezzzzzzz
Doesn't the old 3 lnb dish see those 2?

I have the triple LNB dish(MPEG2) with my R22-100(no BBCs) and I can watch Hope-368.

It would be a simple LNB swap.

I get this channel on my D12-100 MPEG2-only receiver. There is no way this channel is only being broadcast in MPEG4...

Well that dish is fine since it gets 110 and 119. The dish itself isn't MPEG2 or MPEG4. It's just the transmission and the receiver is what needs to be MPEG4.
So I guess a modification would be this:
Dish required - Any that gets 110/119. This would include the old Phase III triple LNB and the new Slimline 5.
Receiver required - MPEG4 capable

Maybe it's both? I would think that Doug's contact wouldn't be wrong. But I guess you never know.

I don't think we will see many, if any new channels come on board that aren't MPEG-4.. What would be the point? Bringing in new channels will help push peopel to upgrade equipment too....

Confirmed it does not require mpeg 4 at this time.

I seem to remember the "Slammer" apologizing in the previous thread for the slamming that took place.

My HR10 receives this channel and the signal strength test shows that it is on 119 TP 22.
So, I guess the question is what sat and TP is the MPEG4 version on?

The channel has always been on 119. Since MPEG2 receivers can now see it, I highly doubt they're broadcasting both MPEG2 and MPEG4. They probably switched it over to MPEG2 only.

Yea that's the one I have the old Phase III dish, sorry thought I would have to have BBCs in line(which I don't) to see MPEG4 on my R22-100.:o

BBC are not needed for MPEG4. What BBCs do is allow the KA signals on 99 and 103 to be properly converted (in simple terms) so that the receivers can receive them.
MPEG2 and MPEG4 are simply compression. Has nothing to do with satellites, LNBs or the dish.

To be even more specific the BBCs are required to receive the Ka Lo signal used by d10 and d11. The Ka Hi signals from the spaceway sats do not require them.

Technically, it's just the Ka-Lo signals from D10 and D11 that the BBCs have to convert. The Ka-Hi signals from Spaceway 1 & 2 can be received without the BBCs.
