View Full Version : Will Dish ever expand their dish distants?
I was wondering if Charlie will ever expand his dish distant broadcast channels from 6 to more? If they did,i'd like to see minneapolis as one,but dish said it wasn't up to tehm. It was to the city to do that. Is that true? I have dallas, atlanta now and would drop atlanta for mpls. What channels would like to see added? Is it that costly to add more distants? Steve,Chris please let me know what you think,Jack
There have been no indications that E* would add another city to the distant nets. To tell you the truth I have no idea who says which cities can be distant net cities. My guess, and its just a guess, would be its up to the provider since D* only offers LA and NYC as distant nets. The last resort would be a change in service address to one that qualifies for Minneapolis. The good thing about that is that way youd get all the Minneapolis channels instead of just the big 4, in the unliklihood that Minneapolis would become a distant net DMA. Sorry I couldnt be more definate.

The big problem is, of course, spot beams. Once implemented by E*, I probably couldn't see Minneapolis locals even if I lied about my location since the spot beam wouldn't cover the west coast. At least E* offers a set of Mountain Time networks as well as Eastern/Central and West Coast Time zone programming. I subscribe to Chicago and Denver as well as the Portland LIL. This means I genreally have three chances to watch a network show each night. It also means that my displayer has fewer conflicts when it comes to recording shows on the Big-Four OTA nets.
Nonetheless, I would probaly subscribe to all the existing CONUS cities if the law allowed. Before SHVIA was passed I had NY, Miami, Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, and LA in addition to Portland.
I don't know if i understood what you meant rlw,I asked a person at Dish about adding another or 2 cities for dsih distant broadcast channels and she said it was up to the city itself. Wouldn't a city want to expand thier channel to others? I heard the main reason that locals don't want to give up their status is the commericals they have advertised on. Does that make sense to you? Since i lost abc networks on directv,i get NO MORE abc programming at all. I heard some people lost more than 1 network. All i ever wanted to view network channels in a better quality picture. If i was granted minneapolis,i'd take it. I know i'm one of the ones on these forums who won't get their locals, everyone is lucky enough.
Rumor is that Seattle will be added in the near future. This came from a CSR that I spoke to recently when adding a city for a customer so take it as you like.
