Whedon in an interview with TV guide online, confirmed that Charisma Carpenter will not be back next year (except for maybe a few guest appearances). He said Cordie had gone as far as the character could go and that the romance with Angel was not proving popular with the fans. Also she is busy being a new mom.
SciFi news #319 has more of the story.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need the great sarcastic lines, from someone comfortable with "Their Inner Bi*ch". And of course they killed off Anya, she might have been a good replacement.
How could the romance with Angel take off, Gypsy Soul Curse would get in the way!!!

Lets see what happens before rushing to judgment. We don't know the circumstances, or if it was a decision by the producers or the actress. In both this current and past season, Cordy was absent for several episodes.
It could be that Carpenter wants to pursue a new career path as "mother".

Either way, she'll be missed, I just don't like change :D
Actually it was Cordelia appearing on Angel that make me want to watch Angel, since I grew to love her character best. Those nasty characters one season who get redeemed (Cordelia, Anya, Spike, Andrew) all get the best lines.

Time to bring Willow to Angel! She and Fred could battle in fun fashion. Plus she could bring Kennedy with her as well (I think that was her girlfriend's name). Now that she is a slayer as well, the gang could use her as well.

Yuck! I found Kennedy to be annoying at best.
I think it's for the best (Cordelia not being a regular) as I didn't like the romance angle or Saint Cordy. She was at her best being a bit shallow.
Now I do hold out hope that team Angel does have to deal with a slayer gone bad - ala Faith, but even worse - it would have a lot of action, plus it could allow some Buffy characters to visit.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the Wolfram & Hart cliffhanger. Are they now gonna become some high tech agency now (and finally ditch the hotel..... I keep feeling like I'm on the Tower of Terror ride at Disney when I watch the thing)

Faith has redeemed herself, so she is no longer "Gone Bad", and now I assume there are several MILLION slayers to pick from.

I vote for FAITH.
But she is on another FOX series next year. Either it will be at least a year (if her series fails) or never if the show does well.
