We have suggestions enabled on our Samsung DirecTivo and recently have noticed that rather than picking up programming, the suggestions are picking up infomercials. Has anyone noticed something similar?
Is this something we can complain to DirecTV about, or is cancelling suggestions our only option? We would rather not cancel them as we do occasionally pick up a program we otherwise would have missed.

That's what your thumbs down button is for. Hit it 3 times every time an infomercial comes up. Eventually, Tivo (the ones who control the suggestion database) might get the hint.
It will also help if you use thumbs up on the kind of shows you do want to record.

The "thumbs down" recommendation is your best bet, short of disabling "Suggestions".
It's a Tivo thing, not something DirecTV can do anything about. And those suggested recordings are based on your own viewing preferences, modulated by the "thumbs" recommendations.

I guess I'll have to stop watching The Pitchmen on the Discovery Channel.
I guess I'll have to stop watching The Pitchmen on the Discovery Channel. That could be the problem -- your TiVo thinks you actually want to watch infomercials, especially those with Billy Mays in them.
