View Full Version : New D* Channel 58-2 KLCS in Los Angeles?
Is any So. Cal. HD subscriber receiving and know what might be the thinking behind DirecTV assigning the standard definition DTV sub-channel channel "58-2 KLCS" (PBS-LAUSD) to their HD package? I say this because the new channel only appears on my HD DVRs channel line-up and not on the SD ones.
Its officially listed in the guide info. as "A3 Los Angeles 58-2 KLCS PBS," and seems to have appeared 3-4 days ago.

IIRC, by the terms of the agreement between DirecTV and the Association of Public Television Stations, PBS stations have the ability to choose to have either their HD signal or a subchannel carried by DirecTV. It appears that KLCS has chosen the latter.

I can understand that, but since it's an SD channel like this one is, why would DirecTV only make it available in their HD line-up?

I'm not sure if the SD boxes D/R series can even show the sub (-) channels. That may be why it only shows on the H/HR series.

It's probably MPEG-4.

Yoiu must be using OTA.

No that was the first thing I checked. The channel listing for 58-2 in the guide is in blue (as well as black) indicating that it's coming from DirecTV. I also temporarily disconnected the off-air antenna from the AM21 while tuned to it and the picture is still there. Besides I have another HR22-100 without the AM21 tuner and channel 58-2 in blue is listed there as well.
But the other two previous suggestions may be the reason it only shows as a part of the HD package I guess.

Nope. Getting it here, too. I don't have an OTA setup.
It's listed as a "PBS HD" channel in the "DirecTV Browse Channel Details" list on their web-site for the L.A. DMA zip codes. But this is confusing for two reasons. 1) KLCS-58, the L.A. Unified School District's TV channel officially classified as a PBS station is presently broadcasting only 4 SD sub-channels (and no HD). 2) Even if they were broadcasting HD, DirecTV is picking up sub-channel "58-2" instead of the normal main sub-channel 58-1 where HD would have been carried.

the only people with sd mpeg4 are 72.5 users. since your in las Angeles you should get that channel on all receivers since it is an sd signal.

Well ...I have four SD only DVRs here and none of them have this new channel. It only appears in the program guide of the HR2Xs. As I said the HD receivers treat it as though it is an HD channel even though it actually is not.

A - (dash) channel doesn't have to be HD.
I'm sticking to my theory that you need mpeg4 gear. H2x/R22/HR2x to get that -2 channel.

It does not show up on my HR20 except as an OTA channel. I even went into edit settings to see if I can add it, and it wasn't even listed as an option.
My receiver picks it up as 720p. Is Directv up converting it?

Sure you have your receiver set on "native" as its definitely reading as 480i native here? And I don't know what to think about why this "pseudo-HD" sub-channel does not show up on the HR20's channel list as DodgerKing notes. :nono2:

I think it was probably added as an extra local children's channel...makes DTV look good locally. Now if they would only add ThisTV (OTA Channel 5-2).

5-2 is available OTA via DirecTV if you've got an antenna. However, I haven't seen a movie listed there yet that I really want to see.

I like ThisTV myself, but I just wish broadcasters would give greater consideration to telecasting such movie sub-channels in 16:9 at the DVD quality 720X480i/p, so we can both get to see the movies in their original aspect ratio and at an acceptable PQ without unduly affecting the bandwidth needed for the main HD sub-channel such as KTLA's 1920X1080i on 5.1 in this case. Instead they only show 4:3 Pan & Scan versions.
I mean I know that ThisTV has access to the movie's OARs since they show them in 16:9 letter-box form during their up-coming promos. Yet when the movie actually airs it's always in 4:3 Pan & Scan formated for 4:3 analog TV.

This is incorrect. Any channel can be broadcast in MPEG-4, doesn't matter where its coming from, and there is a new channel from 119 thats national that is in mpeg4, as well as all local markets launched in the last 2 or 3 years, sd and hd have been in mpeg-4.. i.e., palm springs was launched in mpeg4 sd channels only last year, along with others.

This is definetly a sat channel, I'm getting it on my hr21... and I don't have an AM21...
I have a feeling they choose that feed because it probably has more unique channel programing. I have a feeling that you will see all the primary pbs stations be the same national feed, and the more localized programing be on the sub channels, meaning there would be no point in picking up 58-1 because it will have the same programing as 28-1, which we also have.... Just my best guess... I believe that was supposed to start happening after the switch, so we shall see...

According to Wikipedia, KLCS's 58.2 subchannel is PBS Kids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PBS_Kids), not an SD version of KLCS 58.1.

The best thing about KLCS channels is that there are never any pledge breaks. OTOH, they do show the school board meetings which are pretty dull -- haven't watched more than two minutes...
