MediaBistro.com:Best Season in Three Years

CBS Sunday Morning wrapped up its 2008-09 ratings year as the #1 Sunday morning news program. The broadcast was up 3% in households and up 5% in Total Viewers. The Charles Osgood-hosted program had its best Total Viewer performance, averaging 4.99 million, since the 2005-06 season.

And this may say something about they effect of television programs broadcast in high definition: last Sunday's annual "By Design" episode, the show's first in HD, was up 10% in households, up 16% in Total Viewers and up 17% in A25-54 viewers, compared to the same week last season.

As a long-time devotee of CBS Sunday Morning, naturally I am pleased to see the show do well in the ratings, but to see the show in glorious HD for the very first time was a real treat. For a long time I've thought the show would be a natural to be broadcast in all HD, and this past Sunday morning bore that out. All the studio work was done in HD, as were the feature segments, which. considering the episode's "By Design" theme, were stunning in their color depth and resolution.

Recently, somewhere in another thread, a poster noted that CBS does HD very well. After seeing their new Sunday HD offering, I wholeheartedly agree!

It was a significant positive change as the show normally does one piece on art a week as well as the ending scenic/wildlife segment. Glad to see they had even better ratings. We were trying to remember when the show started to repeat segments. I know budgets are tight so I now save the shows from Sundays we miss because of having friends and family visit to use to fill in.
