I would wait. The prices are coming down every month. Take a look in late July, early August when they try and "unload" this years model to make room for the new models. You can get great prices then.
Also I would look into a 16:9 aspect ratio TV. All HD content is in this format.

I have a Sony Wega, and the thing I regret most about it is that I did not get 16:9. It was a bit early 2 years ago when I got it for 16:9, but now I would only buy 16:9.

It is a good set otherwise, has a very nice picture. If you watch only standard TV 4:3 would probably be ok for a couple more years, but with DVDs and HDTV 16:9 is the way to go.

Sony TVs do have a great picture. Timco definitly has a point. 16:9 is definitely the way to go because a 4:3 TV will have black bars on the top and bottom if you try to watch something formatted in 16:9.

You can play the waiting game forever. Last Summer, the 34" 16X9 tubes were going for $2500-$2900, depending on make and model. Now they are going for $1900. I can guarantee this will not be the last TV you ever buy. Technology will march ever forward. Go with widescreen for sure, remember tubes way a ton. Hard to move (and steal) for sure. Take a look at some of the RP-LCD TV's as well. Light weight, slim design, lots of ++'s.

The Sony HD direct view TV's only have a resolution of 800 lines, whereas the new model year that is coming out has over 1400 lines. I would wait and buy the newer sets.

I know what you mean by the waiting game. By the time you wait there is an announcement of another new tv coming out and then you may choose to wait again and then it keeps happening over and over again. Sometimes there is a large room for improvement until they have improved about all they are going to improve until a new type of technology comes out or a longer amount of time goes by before an improvement.
