View Full Version : HD DVR - One Satellite Feed

I am looking at getting another HD DVR in another room in the house. I only have one satellite feed to that room. How can I spit it and use both tuners? Is this even possible.

It is possible but not with any regular cable splitter.
You would have to upgrade , most likely DIY, to a SWM [ Single Wire Multiswitch ]system.

It will depend on what IRDs [ boxes] you have, if you can reach the dish, how much you want to spend.

How many receivers/dvr's do you currently have? What type of dish? Let's assume a regular Slimline dish with 4 coax connectors on it. To change a receiver to a DVR, you need to run another coax from the dish to the DVR's second tuner input. If there are no open ports on the dish, then you need to use a multiswitch, the WB68. In that case, run four coax from the dish to the WB68 inputs, and then you will have 8 outputs available to feed up to 8 tuners.

Alternately, as noted, you can use an SWM8 external SWM multiswitch which will let you have a dual tuner DVR with only one coax. But all of your receivers must be SWM capable if you convert to SWM. You will have to bear the cost of buying the SWM8, and do the installation of it yourself.

I have a regular slimline with 4 coax connectors. I am using all the connectios from the dish already.
I have 1 HR21-100 and 2 H21-100's

I guess these are not SWM compatable. Can you tell me which ones are?

SWM-compatible receivers are:
D12, R16, R22, H2x, HR2x

Your HR21 and H21s will do fine. The SWM8 also has 3 legacy ports (not compatible with the 99 and 103 satellites) which can be used with other model receivers.

The SWM LNB would seem to be an ideal fit for you if you're handy with a screwdriver and don't mind climbing around where the dish is.

If the four lines from the dish are run to the same place in the house, then the SWM8 may be a better solution.

What does the multiswitch have to do with MRV which is done via the network connection?

What does the multiswitch have to do with MRV which is done via the network connection?A recent technical demonstration showed SWM functioning as the network connection (as has been speculated -- and summarily dismissed by some as crazy talk -- for some time now). A unified, hardwired and always present networking methodology is not to be overlooked.

SWM8 & SWMLNB are so close in design/function that this shouldn't be an issue.

SWM8 & SWMLNB are so close in design/function that this shouldn't be an issue.There seems to be some question as to whether or not the SWM8 supports the networking functionality that was demonstrated. The concern is based on the idea of sharing content within an MDU scenario as I recall.

I'm aware of this. A notch filter at the access point to each dwelling would resolve this. With only 8 tuners on a SWM8, there won't be too many neighbors sharing the same SWM8.
