View Full Version : KOCE-50 (PBS) Los Angeles now in HD

Just a heads up, it appears that PBS station KOCE-50 in L.A. (actually licensed for Huntington Beach, CA). is now being carried in HD on DirecTV's LiL HD channel package for the L.A. DMA.

Labeled as "A3 Los Angeles 50 KOCE PBS."

This officially gives the L.A. DMA 3 HD PBS locals in their LiL package. KCET-28, KOCE-50, and KLCS-58.2, though as noted on another thread while listed as HD KLCS-58.2 is actually an SD sub-channel at present.

HoTat2, thanks for keeping on top of these LA HD locals.

I hope they add KLCS Ch 58 HD. I can pull in on my Winegard (/Terk) radar looking antenna (along with 28.1, 50.1, 56.1, 58.1 blah blah blah :) ). But with D* having the channels, it just makes everything so much easier. I dont't have to kepp adjusting my antenna.

1. BTW did D* improve the PQ on KCET?

I remember when it first launched me and another poster here clearly saw a difference between the D* feed of KCET HD, and or off air feed of KCET HD.
The D* feed was noticably soft.

Thank-you

I temp disconnected my off air antenna and can't check right now.

EDIT#2 - Major: Channel name.

I like watching "Nature" and Nova."

[I got this channel on U-verse.]

I hope they add KLSC Ch 58 HD.

Since KLSC has a subchannel on DirecTV, they will not be in HD. The agreement with the Association of Public Television Stations (APTS) allows each station to elect whether they would be carried in HD OR have a subchannel carried. Since KLSC chose the subchannel route that precludes their being in HD.

I live in area code 92277, 29 Palms, CA, and must be on the outer edges of the beam that transmits the PBS HD signal. I receive all the commercial stations 2 - 13 in HD and all the PBS stations in SD. My Guide lists KOCE as LA 50 and KCET as LA 28. Does anyone know specifically why I would not be receiving the PBS HD signal in the high desert. Thanks.

Your right about that sub-channel thing. It was mentioned in the KLCS 58.2 thread. Thanks.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by ran out of room for LA HD locals?

Newshawk keeps a web page listing all HD locals. Los Angeles has more than any other market, and more than he anticipated he'd need.

Um, Aren't you in Palm Springs DMA? If so you will only receive channels that are meant for that DMA from Sat, even if you can get them via Antenna.

Orange County is considered a part of the Los Angeles DMA. Some of the southern parts of the county get San Diego locals as well, but only OTA or cable.

Tks, Guys for yr replies. I live about 60/70 miles north of Palm Springs
and, as I mentioned, I get all of the LA Locals (and I'm happy with all the sports out of LA) including all 4 of the PBS stations in SD. I only know one other DIRECTV customer in the area with HD and he does not get the PBS channels in HD either so maybe its unique to this area. I sent DIRECTV an e-mail and they resent my authorization but this didn't change anything. Tomorrow I will call and seek some tech support over the phone and at least find out if PBS in HD is available out this way.

I don't think they even have any programming in HD, do they?

A fair amount of the old shows on their schedule could be in HD, but it would involve the current owners of the shows going back to the original film masters and having new HD syndication prints made -- but that's probably more effort and expense than anyone involved wants to deal with. (It's been done with "Star Trek" and "Hogan's Heroes," but I don't think there's much interest on anyone's part for any other shows of similar vintage to be upgraded to HD.)

That would be so cool if D* added KVCR (Riverside) PBS CH. 24 in HD. I'm in Montebello and CAN'T get it now. I would rather have this channel than KDOC 56.

I WOULD HAVE loved to have KLCS CH. 58 HD through D*. But I remember what you guys already told me.

Spoke with DIRECTV "Tech Assistance" this morning and she insists that there is "no HD programming" currently being broadcast on PBS stations KOCE and KCET. I tend to disagree with her but could not argue too loud since I really do not know. Can anyone provide a small list of those PBS programs that you receive in HD on KOCE and KCET so I can have a little ammunition when I call DIRECTV again. The Tech Assistance lady did say she would inform "engineering" of the situation and see what they could find.
Thanks.

Most of the recent pledge drive programs have been HD (or at least wide-screen) on both of these channels. The tech assistance lady apparently isn't paying much attention.

The only thing about this new addition to the HD channel line-up is that some of the users here with SD only receivers feel they may be getting short-changed of sorts since it appears DirecTV is using the OTA feed from KOCE's sub-channel 50-4 to supply the KOCE L.A local for SD only customers which has different programming than their main HD sub-channel and some here feel is inferior.

I told them that this isn't necessarily true since all or maybe most of the programs shown on the HD sub-channel may eventually cycle through to the SD one on 50-4 over time but I really don't have any real proof of that yet to soothe over some ruffled feathers here over this issue.

Yes, 58-1 is the main digital channel for KLCS, available OTA. Neither it nor any of its sub-channels broadcast in HD AFAICT. An HD broadcast is indeed digital, but not all digital broadcasts are HD.

I'm presently picking up only 4 SD sub-channels for KLCS-DT at the moment. And I do not see the picture on 58-2 as stretched (make sure your HD set is on 4:3), but I do see a lot of 16:9 letter-boxed programs televised there.

For all you folks looking for LA24 KVCR in HD, I sent them a note a few months ago. They said they're nowhere near ready for HD and don't have the funding needed to transition to HD. Having said that, they probably have the best programming variety of any of the PBS stations in the LA area so it'll be nice when they do start broadcasting in HD.

Three of the "Techs" said they had no clue and the last lady explained that the LA "spot beam" distributing the PBS HD stations, even tho I receive them in SD, and they are available in Mammoth, Needles, Blythe, all along the Colorado River, "probably are just not available in Zip Code 92277". Don't make any sense to me but what do I know. I asked with the new satellite going up in the Fall would this make a difference, and she had no clue. So I guess "it is what it is" and live with it.

As a matter of fact, Evilquick, all is well with DIRECTV HD in the high desert. Couple of weeks ago we lost all HD of all the local channels out of LA for about 6 days. Called DIRECTV and they had no clue as to why. Anyway one morning turned the TV on and all the HD locals had returned and, surprise, KCET & KOCE were in HD and Channel 58-2 (KLCS) was also present. So I am most pleased to receive the PBS programming in HD. Tks for asking.
