I live in South Jersey and get all local channels out of Philadelphia. A rep at Direct TV told me I can buy a digital antenna from them and the installer will set up my system so I get all the New York local channels. Is this true? If not is there any way I can get New York tv in south jersey?

My understanding is 60 Miles is about the maximum from the transmitter, depending on height. That's what they are quoting here in Charleston, SC

I second the suggestion to use tvfool.com - it's a great site. Be as accurate as you can with the height of your antenna and provide your actual street address to see what channels you can receive.
I would follow-up with DIRECTV on exactly what kind of antenna it will be, simply to make sure it can receive the NY channels.
As to the DIRECTV receiver and OTA channels, it can have channels from three local markets available to you to add to your lineup, so if you can receive the channel via antenna, you can tune it on your receiver.

I was playing around with the site you lead the other person to in order to see what it would tell me I could recieve. Im going to sound very dumb in terms of understanding what it was saying. When I looked at the channel listings that came up after typing my zipcode,I noticed that some of the channels it listed said they were Tropospheric scatter channels. What type of antenna are you talking in able to recieve such OTA signals? Does something tell me that requires a parabolic type dish? This would also answer a very old question I never could get answers to. Back in the old days our cable tv company used to pick up one of these channels. I know for a fact that the channel wasn't uplinked on the satellites and I just NEVER could figure out how they were able to get it in the air. The channels Im talking about in my case are 100 miles from here. Thanks for filling me in if you do know something

My experience with tvfool and fringe/near fringe reception has been that you should not try to receive anything via tropo. There have been posts here on receiving stations 100 miles away, and yes it can be done (especially in a flat state such as Illinois). But the fading and multipath that goes with these long paths usually results in breakup.
A good quality outdoor antenna mounted in the clear, with a pre-amp mounted at the antenna, receiving 2edge is about the limit, in my experience.
I've spent a lot of years vacationing at the south Jersey Shore and can tell you that reception of NYC signals is probably not going to work.
As far as how your local cable company provided signals from 100 miles away: With an analog signal, a 200 foot tower, and the terrain of Illinois, they might have been able to receive it directly. The signal also might have been "piped in" via fibre or microwave. My cable system in PA did this via microwave with several NYC stations back in the 60's and 70's.
