Here's the setup r15-500 in one loaction H21-700 in another.
Tuner 2 on the R15 goes from 98 to 0 to 98 to 0 and back and forth.
I get the blue message box all day poppinh up saying searching for sat on tuner 2 ,771. The picture cracks every now and then like loss of signal.

the hr21 is pegged at 99 on both tuners, when I swap cables on the r15 there is no change , tuner 1 is good, tuner 2 still goes bad.
All this pretty much takes my cables and the connections out of the picture.

I have RBR 3 times in the last 3 days with no luck

I called tech support and they have scheduled someone to come out on Wed for a service call and test and replace if need be.

I have set my dish setup now on the r15 as standard round and unplugged tuner 2 just so I can watch tv in piece.

Has anyone ever seen a tuner itself go bad? It has to be that as every other variable has been cleared.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tuners fail. Solder joints fail. That your tuner failed is not something you need to be ashamed of (unless you caused the failure).

Speaking of causing failure, how is your R15 placed? Is it in some sort of enclosure or stacked on top of something that is toasty?

it has been in the same media cab for like 4 years, it has other stuff around it (DVD player, Yamaha Tuner)

I unplugged it for 30mins and connected my coax and then plugged back in,
It several trys for it even to come on. Then just for grins i did CE code and dl'ing new software,,went very slow..then near the end it powered off and never came back on.

So another unplug and plug back in, and it comes on and goes back to dl'ing new software. But it just sits there and no progress,,then I did 2 rbr's and both times it boots to dl'ing new software and just sits there...Me thinks I may be screwed and I have to wait until Wed for the tech to get here...

Failures as a result of heat often don't happen overnight. They take a while to do enough damage to be noticeable. Putting any DVR in a cabinet will likely reduce its lifespan. Adding things like receivers and amplifiers only speeds up the inevitable process.7) Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
8) Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.

...

• Ensure proper ventilation — the vent slots on the DIRECTV Plus Receiver must be left uncovered to allow proper airflow to the unit. Blocking the airflow to the unit could impair performance or damage your receiver and other components.
• Do not stack electronic components or other objects on top of the DIRECTV Plus Receiver. Also, do not stack the receiver on top of a “hot component” such as an audio power amplifier.

I have had a small slim Sony DVD player on the R15 for years with no issue.
It does not completely block airflow but I guess per your reply it is not recommended. I think if my tuner is fried when the tech comes Wed, I will go ahead and get another Hr21/HD receiver since I plan on upgrading that TV in the near future. I will just run the HD unit on a standard set for a while.

If you do this you will get popped $199 PLUS the cost of the service call!

Why don't you cancel your service call and dial a CSR. See if you can get a reduced-cost UPGRADE of your R15? (Don't tell them it's broken)

the ri15 woind up being fried, I just went to Costco and got a new Hr22, since I am upgrading that location to HD anyway. I tried to talk CSR down some, but my Costco still had a better price. The Hr22 is up and running fine now, no issues. The R15 definitely was fried. But it was several, several years old and had been run hard
