We're getting ready to move to Satellite Internet and get rid of our land line phone.

The ONLY thing that's standing in the way is the fact the the DirecTivo insists on being connected to a phone line 24/7.

What will I lose by losing the land line? Will the unit still be usable for day to day watching/recording? Will I lose guide data? What's going to happen?

DirecTiVos only have to be connected to a phone line during initial setup. Once the setup is complete you can disconnect it from the phone line FOREVER (or until an initial setup needs to be run again for some reason). You will start getting nag screens after a couple of weeks without a dial-out but they are easily cleared off the screen and do not keep the unit from functioning properly.

You can always go around the call back message but that's probably not something I could post here.

You will also not be able to order DirecTV cinema movies using your remote.

Software updates are autherized via the phone connection. If there were any software updates for your box they would never get installed. Most likley that wouldn't be a problem.

Heck, a lot of DirecTiVo owners can't get a software update or a good call-in from the box even *with* a phone connection...

Yeah, that is true. Those call back numbers for some reason just dont connect.

So...

From what I gather here, losing the land line isn't going to affect the day to day operation of the unit itself...I'll still get updated guide data and be able to schedule recordings. The only thing I'll lose is the software update stuff...do I understand correctly?

To be honest, this unit may not be long for the world as it's getting a bit long on the tooth but I want to keep as long as it's functional. It's in the bedroom and is most definitely NOT one of the primary receivers in the house.

Pretty much on the money there. Guide comes from the satellite. Also no more PPV with the remote. But you can login online for that.

What satellite provider did you go with? We current have the residential HughesNET service and understood that the latency issue (lag time) wouldn't allow for VOIP phone service.
