View Full Version : Directv Online Guide
Is it just me or is DirecTV's online guide as lame as it seems to be? Really -- All the channels on one page and no way to filter? (Oh, I can filter. I can select movies and then see only PPV movies.) I do love my HR21, but jeez remote scheduling with this tool really sucks. And the onlly way to advance too see the next two hours (all that you're allowed at once?) means you have to scroll up to to top again.

My only gripe is it seems to scroll over slowly. Then again I very seldom use it so I can't really complain.
I've only used the online guide when there was a specific title I wanted to remotely schedule. I first scrolled to the correct time, then I use the browser's search function to jump to the channel number, and then I found the title and scheduled it.
I agree it could be more user friendly, and ideally as you mention it would have more options throughout the page for changing to the next or previous two hour block... and for filtering, just like the HR2x DVRs have for guide filtering (sports, movies, High-Def, etc.)

The functionality of E* boxes are heads above D*. I can speak from experience because I now have D* and it's slow and cumbersome by comparison. I wish D* would focus on improved basic functions, like "speed" before they provide the world's every wish.

This was about the website and not about receivers.

:yesman: I'm with you. Needs improvement, especially a better search/find. Filter would be nice too.
I use ZAP 2 IT (http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tvlistings/ZCGrid.do?fromTimeInMillis=1234227600000)
Best online guide I've found. Of course this link is my set up for Boston area. You can set it up for your specific channels.

But that also means bupkus as far as scheduling recordings on-line using - wait for it - the on-line DirecTV guide (which is what the OP was about in the first place). ;)
It used to be better. It used to have a rating system and you could set reminders for programs. All of that went away when they added the remote scheduling. I used to use those features and wish they would return.

The online guide is torture to use. As mentioned, scrolling back to the top of the page constantly is very annoying. I would use it much more often if it was not such a chore.

I just scheduled a recording online, but chose the wrong station (the lower number duplicates don't come in for me.) Can I cancel a schedule recording online too?
If you do not receive that channel, the recording from the online guide will just fail (you will have a failure message in your history list).
There are couple other things that I would add. First, search function is missing. Second, when I find a program that I want to record, program guide is showing other time slots but I'm unable to jump to these showings.

I too hate the current configuration of the scheduler. It requires that you know the time and channel of your show that you want to record in order to be efficient. If you do not know the time of your show, you are required to
1) guess at the time
2) Scroll down to the channel
3) Check for the show
4) If not found at that time, scroll back up to the top of the screen
5) Move the time forward
6) Repeat 2-5 until show is found
It would be so much better to be able to scroll through the time while at the channel of interest. In other words place the ability to move to the next time slot on the channels so that you can skip the constant scrolling to the top of the page, moving to the next time slot, and then scrolling back to your channel.
UGGHH!
How about the speed? Is it only me? It is terribly slow to react to any mouse clicks. Is there something I need to do on my side?

One on-line guide that was a big surprise to me is the iPhone app, faster, by far than the HR20's I have, and far more information regarding movies, cast and descriptions of shows. A very convenient and pleasant surprise indeed.

How about the same "smart search" functionality that is on the DVR... now there's a novel idea.

Don't really use the online guide but the scheduler is WAY BETTER on the Iphone than ~online~ in the browser.
I would vote for filtering as the #1 thing needing improvement. For example, it would be nice to filter on any channel and just see what it on I might want to schedule.
Second thing would be for the browser to "remember" where I was so I didn't have to go back to the top each time I advanced 2 hours. But then, if they implemented filtering I would need to jump around as much as maybe I could see a whole date of what was on the channel.
