I left Dish Network for DIRECTV in October of 2007 to watch Stargate Atlantis on Sci-fi in high definition. Along with a promise from that spring that DIRECTV would be adding the multiplex HBO/Cinemax channels starting in the fall of 2007.

My first impression was the high definition channels were comparable in video quality to Dish Network, while the SD channels looked a little worse on DIRECTV.

So this week I checked with Dish Network on what offers they had to get a longtime customer back. Free VIP722k, free installation, same 2 year commitment as DIRECTV but no $199 for a leased HD DVR up front. The first 3 months will be about half what my DIRECTV bill has been, the next 3 about 2/3 of my DIRECTV bill, then after 6 months still about $20 per month cheaper than DIRECTV. My final DIRECTV bill will be less than the regular monthly total, even with the ETF at this point.

The high definition channels on DIRECTV look soft compared to Dish Network. (Sony Bravia SXRD KDS-60A3000 60-Inch 1080p Rear Projection HDTV).

Quite a few more movie channels (HBO/Cinemax) and a few HD channels that have been conspicuous in their absence from DIRECTV (Travel HD, et. al.)

Some software releases for the HR2? series have been tolerable, while others have made the boxes slow to snail's pace.

It's been interesting. Good luck with that "up to 200 HD channels" promise with the launch of D12. We all know "up to 150 HD channels" with launch of D11 was marketing mumbo jumbo.

I won't let the door hit me in the a$$ on the way out of the DIRECTV side of these forums.

Carpe diem and make it a good one!

Sounds like you're making the right choice for you. Although you're the first to compare E* HD quality favorably to D*'s.

Enjoy your new service. But why did you even bother to tell us?

Why shouldn't he have shared his thoughts on the comparison between DirecTV and Dish?

It is frustrating to not have a big HD National Festivus in a while. But, the folks that got there HD LiL, and there has been alot, are probably real real happy. I know I was.

As for mumbo jumbo, they are going to have to put something on D12.

I love my DirecTV™ programming, Sunday Ticket, MLB EI, NBA LP, HD Locals since the winter(non-existent on DISH). Both HD and SD PQ are great as far as I am concerned. I don't think I could have the 5 HD DVR's and two HD receivers with DISH(without buying them I guess). I would not have another provider. That being said, I am looking forward to WGN HD and Travel Channel HD. Hopefully in the fall.

Good luck with your switch back to DISH.

Although you're the first to compare E* HD quality favorably to D*'s.One would certainly hope that the OP wasn't judging based on a romantic memory as opposed to comparing the two side-by-side on their own television.

Clearly the HBO/Cinemax deficiency is a major issue for more than a few DIRECTV subscribers.
