I've been a DIRECTV subscriber for approx 4 years. My current setup is an HR20-100 in my living room, an R15-300 in my bedroom, and a standard D10-300 in my daughters bedroom. The R15-300 is running only on one tuner currently.

My contract was up as of June 9, 2009. Two weeks ago I called in to see what deals they had going on. They offered me a free HD-DVR for my bedroom, $10 monthly credit for 12 months, and STARZ free for 6 month. So, I accepted the offer. I told the person that I'll want the new HD-DVR to work with both tuners but with only one coaxial cable, they said it wouldn't be a problem.

Next day I got a call from the install group at DIRECTV and they confirmed everything. I also asked them if they can make the new HD-DVR work with only one coaxial cable and have both tuners work, and they said yes.

Two days later the installer arrived, long story short, my existing receivers will NOT work with the SWM system. He said I would need all new receivers. I called DIRECTV, and they said that I would need to pay $300 to upgrade my other receivers so that it would work. I told them to cancel this upgrade/order and had the installer leave.

Where the new HD-DVR is going, there's no way to get another coaxial cable up there. It's on the second floor, and there's no attic space since we have cathedral ceilings.

So what would you all do? I'm currently setup like I said in the beginning of this post without being in contract. I've thought about switching to DISH, but I've got my ATT DSL and ATT wireless bill all together.

The new receiver was replacing the R15? If so, the only other receiver that would need replacing is the D10. Even if you replace it with an HD receiver, that should only be $99? I'm not sure where they are getting the $300 figure.

Yes, the new HD-DVR is replacing the R15, but I was wanting to move it into my daughter's room and get rid of the standard D10. So I would have to get another HD-DVR to replace my HR20-100 and another standard DVR to replace the R15.

The R15 is not compatible with SWM technology so you would need to replace it. Did you politely ask if they could offer a better price than $99. You have a great deal even if it costs you $99.:):):)

DIRECTV told me I'd have to replace it. I'll call them tomorrow and double check. If I can keep my HR20-100, I'll do this.

Thanks everyone!!!

FYI (dont know if this is a big deal for you) even if you cancel everything right now, most likely you've just started another 2 year contract with them.

300 might come from them thinking of price of replacing the d10 as well as cost of swm setup and labor. thinking they may consider it a non standard install since upgrades generally don't get credited for swm.
just thinking out loud here.

I've got an installer coming tomorrow morning to see about running another cable. We'll see what happens.
