I have a new idea to receive local news without much bandwidth. It may not be the best way but better than nothing. You know how some radio stations broadcast a tv station's news? Why couldn't Dish broadcast the news on just audio channels from the smaller markets that they may not be able to put up yet?
For one they could use the same channel/bandwidth for multiple stations in different time zones so that would save space. They could either reserve each station to a channel number and use the same bandwidth to broadcast the news from one channel to another channel or put the local news for different areas on the same channel.
For one, if allowed, this would allow people in different areas to hear the news in other areas. If it would not be allowed to broadcast news from other areas then they could just black them out except for your own DMA or just squeeze them onto spot beams in which they do not take up much space anyways.
This is an idea just for those smaller markets that may not get their locals for a while so that they can get their local news. They could even broadcast this over a high speed internet connection to the satellite company in which then can broadcast it over satellite instead of having to send it as they normally would if they had the video feed as well.
Also another idea is to maybe send it in a file just as they would a ppv on the hard drive with instant access as they were thinking of doing later. That would require a lot more bandwidth though and the receiver would have to have a hard drive (PVR).
Also they could implement this in text and pictures of local news on the interactive OpenTv channel 100. In the weather section it would perhaps include a radar of your region updated every so often. Since the OpenTv used a dial up connection for interactive information perhaps they could use this for audio local news and downloading local weather radar.
