View Full Version : Moving Installation and Upgrades
Hello all. We'll be closing on our new house later this week and will need to have our DirecTV service moved to our new house. My question is, does moving the service cost anything? Also, our contract is up in August but I would like to stay with DirecTV and upgrade to HD. Is there any chance I get a good deal on the upgrade? I've seen where HD DVRs cost $199 and that is what I want but that is just a little too much. :eek2: Do they work with you on moving upgrades? How about later on when I add more HD capable TVs to my home, will upgrading standard receivers to HD receivers be easy?
Thanks.

The movers package is free if you have not done it in the past year I believe. Upgrade of equipment, I don't know, you would have to talk to Directv. I am a tech and I can tell you I bring along new equipment to movers installs. I don't know the details of arrangements between a customer and Directv. I am just doing the install.
Just a note, have all your televisions at the new house, and where they will be used. It will help the tech get the install done much better, and you won't have to do the hook up later, and maybe be confused about how to do it. Some people can be, even if you wouldn't be. As noted in other postings, it can set the tech up for charge backs if someone else has to come out again and hook up the tv that gets moved in after the install is completed. He then loses all the money he earned doing your install.
Good luck with the move. Alan

Many times based on your payment history and such they will at least upgrade 1 for around $99. But the best way to find out is to call and see.

Call DTV ask for the movers services; Ask them if they could include a HDDVR with the movers connect. The right CSR should be able to help you out. Other then the cost of the DVR if any the movers connect is a free services, you bring your current box's and leave the dish and cabling, DTV will install a new dish and cable at your new house. One more thing the addition of an HDDVR will extended your commitment for 24mo, not sure if the movers connect alone will and a commitment.
The official phone number for DIRECTV MOVER'S CONNECTION is 1-877-616-MOVE (1-877-616-6683).

I've done plenty of mover's with upgrades so no issues with that part. The deal depends on account status.
Even without upgrade the free mover's will lock you into commitment.
As said before have all TV's ready, All old IRDs and all ACs too.

The bell I ring is: DON'T
Do what you want with DTV and the upgrade will be no problem. But don't do it the same day as you move in. You will be herding movers and your stuff. You will need all av stuff in place when the DTV tech arrives. If there is any doubt about LOS (line of sight) that is another reason for not attempting to do the DTV mover's connection on the same day as the move - in.
While I try to accommodate the customer........if mover wonks try to move my ladder I try to drop hammers on them. No I won't pitch in for cleaning the rugs because everyone was walking through the house. And yes, I will charge to return when you find all the TVs. DTV internet is from a different planet. ..........The list continues.
Get the TVs up and running with a plan for where they will be used.......schedule the mover's REESTABLISHMENT OF SERVICE. Look for previous DISH or DTV installation stuff....(that will help)......Plan for OTA use. If you want a Caller ID or PPV service the land line has to be connected by the phone company. You are on your own for the interior phones before the DTV tech can connect them.
DON'T do it the same day you move in.
Good luck!

Dont forget that if you need extra lines ran it may cost you. Dont think everything is free. You might need a pole mount, not free? ect.

How much does a pole mount cost? What extra lines do you speak of?

I don't know how much additional lines are but I believe my Slimline Dish Pole Mount was $80-$90 including price of pole and cement.

I always setup the movers and D* on the same day. This way D* will not mess up my system. I usually have at least one TV set up and ready for them. The main reason is I have a projector and it takes me up to a week to get everything setup. Every time I do this (about every 2 years) the D* tech does not have a problem with it. If you have a elaborate setup you may not want D* to mess with it.

Like I said.........you understand the requirements of your system. But you expect the tech to somehow check each line with a TV that comes from where?
In two weeks you discover there are splitters in your new system and the tech has left. Then what..a free return trip?
I had in mind movers who instisted on the installation as the furniture was being unloaded. Ever herded cats? And when they called the moving company to discover that the last truck....with the TVs & DTV gear was still in another state.....you can imagin my joy at being asked to wire the house and test all the outlets without receivers or TVs.
Just a thought,
Joe

That is why I always have the 32" LCD TV ready and with us to use if necessary. I have installed my own dishes many times, so know what to check or fix.
