I just recently upgraded my old Model 4000 for a PVR 721, and it used to be quite typical that when rain was coming in, I would lose my signal on both satellites when the weather was just beginning to change.  Once the rain actually settled in, the signal came back. I used to think that this was something that is expected with DBS and just lived with it.  I also live in a heavily wooded area and expected the trees played a roll.  I began to think that possibly the "unstable" atmosphere coupled with the trees was the cause.  Since installing the 721, we've had almost daily rain and storms (high winds, etc.).  My 721 has yet to lose the signal (on either tuner).  My 4000 would have lost it several times by now.  I didn't expect that the receiver had anything to do with signal loss, but rather the dish, LNBFs, etc.  I installed the 721 myself.  All I did was change out one of the single LNBF for a dual.  (The prior setup was a Dish500 upgrade and the installer only had one dual and one single LNBF for my single receiver setup. Since I needed to utilize the dual tuner capabilities of the 721, I just changed the single for a dual and left the existing dual alone--I hope that made sense).

So, the question is: Did my receiver improve my reception?  (BTW my signal strengths are about the same as before the 721)

I suspect that your 4000 was having trouble.

Even though the 721 will not have better than normal reception.

An old receiver can have tuner (and or memeory) problems that will make it appear to have poorer reception.

anyway ... just mho

Sometimes the storms in the distance where the satellite signal is coming in from will cause the satellite signal to go out before the storm arrives and then you can expect a big downpour then the signal comes back while it is downpouring because the storm where the signal is where it is starting to clear out.

Sometimes its just the opposite depending on how the storms travel and where you receive your signal from in that it will storm hard then go out as the storm is going away but towards the satellite signal.
