View Full Version : No Signal (0) everything was hunky last night.

Not sure whether or not this is the correct place to post this but....

First I have to preface this by saying we've had tons of rain. Actually just bad weather all together. Anyway last night everything was working fine even though it was cloudy and raining. Today I wake up to more rain and dark clouds. I turn the TV on and no signal (771) I really didn't think about it and watched a DVR'ed program. Sky cleared and switched over to live TV to the same problem. Did a red button reset and a hard reset. Nothing. Checked out other TV's and they're the same. Satellite signal test reports nothing. Not a weak signal... nothing. Zero.

I called *D and went through the whole process again. Still nothing. Checked dish and it seems fine. Alignment might be off but it's not off enough to get absolutely no signal that I can see. While talking with the rep from *D I thought about the multi-switch in the crawl space. Told her it maybe floating in water sort of jokingly. After I got off the phone with her I thought about it some more and that maybe it might not be a joke. So I crawl down there and it's high and dry (installer mounted it on the floor joist). Anyway they're sending someone out tomorrow but I just can't figure out what it would be. Any ideas?

Did you reset?

Sure did. I noticed another post on here that was similar and he stated it "just came back" later in the day. It's weird.

1st guess is water got into a fitting someplace. 2nd guess is a nearby lightening strike took out your LNB.

A casual visual inspection of the dish probably isn't sufficient to tell whether it has moved or not. The dish doesn't function at all if it is more than a degree off. Remember that it is trying to focus on a carefully arranged set of targets that are over 22,000 miles away.

If you tap the dish and it moves at all, it needs to be remounted. If you see galling (chewed up or freshly cut metal) around any of the lockwashers, it probably needs to be realigned.

When testing for any signal, it is best to use a popular national SD channel.

Well yeah I can't say whether or not the dish has been misaligned. From a casual view it hasn't. It's rock solid. It sits in a open field behind my house and there's nothing short of a huge gust of wind that could move it (which we didn't experience). I guess at this point it's moot since they're coming out tomorrow and I'll find out what happened. I'm guessing lightning but who knows? Everything else seems fine.

buried cable that isn't in an encasement?
could be a rock penetration on cable.

OR a failed underground splice (repair). Barrel connectors are not designed for underground use without waterproof tape.

OR water in a fitting....open all outside fittings and make sure the center wire is still there.

OR try just shaking all cables. Some times an uncompressed fitting will do what you describe.

See if any receivers work...check them one at a time. Bypass any multiswitch.

Ended up being the multi-switch. It wasn't weather related. Service tech just said it went out. Just a coincidence that it went out during a storm.

Glad it is fixed.

Feel the new switch...it should not be hot. They are shipped with a chrome terminator. This cap should NOT be installed on unused output ports on multiswitches. There has been a maintenance issue regarding the incorrect use of these caps.

This is just a guess but EZ to check. Remove the cap and then remove the center pin. Plastic caps are ok.

Could be nothing,

Thanks Joe. I'll give that a check tomorrow. So you're saying there's a metal cap on one or more of the unused terminals? I know the old one had a plastic cap on one of them. But anyway I'll check tomorrow.

Any WB68 that is shipping with the weather boots and caps should be ok. Those don't actually have the 75 ohm terminator in them. It's just a cap.

Did you get any lightening overnight? My dish got fried on Friday night, thankfully DTV service came out last night and fixed it. They replaced the LNBs and those in-line devices that screw into the back (not sure what they're called).

Good luck, I hope it's an easy fix.

It was the 3x4s that had the caps........without instruction. Tool bags are full of extras and they look cool..........I used them myself until I got the service note.

There never was a service explanation... just burned 3x4s. And not all 3x4s burned out; just some. The WB 6 x 8s , as you correctly pointed out, are shipped with plastic caps.

BBC's probably.

Yeah I've got a 6x8 and no metal caps.
