Has anyone had a free upgrade from their HR20 DVR's to HR22 or HR23? I would like to upgrade but not sure what Direct will want from me.

Unless there is something wrong with it D* won't upgrade it.

$199 plus 24 months of commitment.

Why is it an upgrade? Isn't HR20 better?

Don't know why you'd want to upgrade. If it's for the bigger hard drive you'd probably be better off just getting a 1TB eSata drive for under a $100 bucks and do it right. :)

Even is something was wrong with it, he might still get an HR20 as a replacement. DirecTV won't guarantee a specific DVR model. And it could be new or refurbished.

I guess you can go to a store that carries a specific HR2x model, pay the fee for it, and send the other one in? Is that allowed?

Yes he can do that but he has to know it is still Lease equipment with normal 24 month agreement

Why is it an upgrade? Isn't HR20 better? If you are talking about integrated OTA, then maybe. :D

I have three different HR2x, and I mostly use the HR21 & HR23. ;)

Oldavman, is there something wrong with your current HR20? I'm not sure they will replace a working DVR.

However, if you're looking to add a DVR you might be able to work something out. :D

My HR20-700 is noticeably faster than my other two, newer HR2X series. I'd just use an external SATA drive instead of getting a new receiver if you want more space!

As far as use, those arent considered upgrades. Most here are pretty convinced the HR20 is still the best of the lot. If you want more storage, add an eSATA.

Can't speak for the HR22 or 23 since I've never used them, but if could swap out a HR20-700 for my HR21-100, I'd do it. The HR20 is much faster at picking up remote commands and I don't have the slip-to-end of recording issue with the HR20.

One cannot get D* to provide you with a specific model. They offered me a rebate to upgrade to HD. I asked for a 23 and they told me I had to take whatever fell off the delivery truck. I said no thanks. I am going to wait for Tivo-D* marriage on a HD. After reading these posts, I think one is better off if their machines work, to keep what they have, including my old Samsung DVR.
