I like a particular news station. Some time ago I swore our boxes went from only buffering if the box is on to always a buffer but there is a catch, you had to make sure you left it on your favorite channel. Which works most of the time but sometimes the box will change channels on it's own I guess for recording 2 shows at once...
So my suggestion would be a default channel. After X amount of non activity it defaults to your channel..
So for me, I know I can always come in and have 2 hours of news to go thru...

The DirecTV DVR+ receivers always buffer the live channel. Even when in standby(off).

I don't think I've ever noticed it changing channels without it having to do so to record something. I usually have mine parked on my local NBC station (I prefer their news) and unless my box needs the second (live) tuner to record another show, it's on that same channel when I come back to it later (or in the morning, etc.).

Yea mine changes every now and then due to 2 shows and you need to remember to leave it on that channel. So it would be cool if it would go to our fav station if no activity.

If you always like to wake up to the channel 2 news, set it for record, limit 1... then it will always be there.. I don't see Directv allowing people to set a default channel for a unit after so many hours of non activity, ever.. There just isn't a point in it for that purpose. That's what record is for..
Now, if they finally added the timer option to these units, then we could set our units to tune to a particular channel at a set time everyday, and then it would be in the buffer.. SO if you want to push for something, that is what I would recommend pushing for.. Its already on their NON-DVR's... Make sure you check out the HD DVR thread, and look int he wishlist thread.. That item is in there.... :D

I was thinking along the same lines. If it's really important to you that your morning buffer is loaded with a particular channel, just set a recurring, one minute, keep at most one episode recording for that channel.
