View Full Version : Rash of bad guide data lately, both Sat and Locals???
I seem to have a fair amount of bad guide data lately. I know some issues are due to locals and the DTV trasnition, but others don't seem related to that.
Both Time Warp and Mythbusters on Discovery have had some guide data issues in the past 3 weeks or so, causing missed recordings.
I have a series link for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Starting this past Monday, I had it start to record both the first showing at 12:37am and another repeat of the saem episode at 3:07am. It is also set up to record them the rest of this week as well.
I noticed yesterday evening that the new episode of Better Off Ted was not set to record last night. The guide data showed an original air date of 6-10-09 when it was first airing last night, 6-23.
I have seen other shows with less than normal data and generic descriptions.
Is Tribune Media just taking the Summer off?
Does DirecTV care whether we remain satisfied customers?

I'm sure that's it, no other reason would make any sense.

The attitudes being displayed lately are just beyond belief....
Yeah we missed the new episode of "Better Off Ted" last night too. It did not record eventhough it is a series link. Not being at home I am not sure what the guide showed for info. We realized we had missed it because we recorded "Superstars" in the time slot before and it had about a minute of a new episode of "Better Off Ted" at the end.
I suspect bad guide info.

I seem to remember this happening last June/July and the June/July before that.
Vacation season is upon us.
2nd and 3rd string operators are running things for the summer.

Good point!

So sorry that I expect that when I pay for a service, it is delivered in a timely and complete manner.
The reason I put that there was because guide data is a constant problem and DirecTV always seems to push it off on Tribune. Thing is, I have no choice but to use their guide data and have no relationship with Tribune. I do have a relationship with DrirecTV so I expect them to have their subcontractors deliver a good service. Just like in my work as a General Contractors. If a sub does not deliver, it is up to us to fix it, not just tell the customer "oh well".

If Tribune is getting bad program info from their subscribers, how are they supposed to provide accurate program info to their own subscribers? You have mentioned that directv pushes the problem onto Tribune, and that it might not be totally off the mark, but how should they (directv) handle it then?

These issues are all related to Tribune and networks, and there is nothing Directv can do about it.. Chances are the Ted episode was supposed to air on the 10th.. Go Thru your history and see if it says anything? Are you set to new only? Did last nights data say it was new or repeat? OAR actually has nothing to do with if a show is recorded....
As for Jimmy, The network is feeding generic data, rather than episode data, so your unit doesn't know it its new or old, so it will record it... Network being lazy and not decide ding which episode till the last second, or not caring enough to tell anyone..
Frankly, some of it may also be networks trying to get false viewer ship increases by getting units to record old episodes that are being shown as new...
I understand about generic data, but I will say that as far as I know, the Better off Ted episode has been planned to run this week after The Superstars for weeks, as that is what ABC announced in a press release right after they renewed the show in May.
My main point is that if DirecTV leaves a large part of their customer experience to outside companies and seems not to care, eventually some of those customers might just go somewhere else. I know that TiVo goes and massages their guide data before sending it out, which results in less of this type of problem. There is no reason DirecTV could not do the same, or at least write a better algorythm to record shows.
