Do DishNetwork receivers capable of handling HD content upconvert shows that are recorded in a lower resolution to 1080i. I was just curious. My plasma will display some graphics telling me what resolution the content that is currently being displayed is in.

On my TV it will say:
YPbPr(being the cables/input I use)
480i, 480p 720p or 1080i(depending on what resoulution)
in the lower right corner of the screen.

I know FOX and ABC for example employ 720p for their HD shows but my TV says it is 1080i. The same thing if a show is actually SD.

It doesn't "lie" when I play PS3 games. If a game is 720p the TV will briefly say 720p and likewise for 1080i. My TV doesn't support 1080p.

Sorry if this sounds confusing or it has already been addressed.

E*'s HD receivers only let you choose one output resolution, so if you choose 720P everything will come out at 720P, including SD at 480i or HD at 1080i. They do not support "native pass through" like some of the D* receivers do, if this is a good thing or a bad thing may depend on several factors. If you search this site for "native pass through" you will find a lot more information about it.

The PS3 switches to 720P for games encoded in that format.
