[edit] Sorry, from what I've been able to discern so far, this only applies to new computer purchases.
Apparently started June 26.

Great time to buy a new PC. Too bad I bought in Jan 09.
I think buy.com has half price on W7 without PC purchase.
Best Buy also has W7 preorder for half price online, according to ad in this week's flyer.

Is this an upgrade, or is it the whole package. I'm wondering because I might be building a new computer in about 6 months. If I buy this for a new machine and wait 6 months to install it will it work???? Can it just be bought and shelved until I need it???
Oops, it appears at the site that I could do either an upgrade or a whole package. Still don't know if I can shelve it for a while though.

Of course you can 'shelve' it.... they can't force you to install it once you buy it....
But, if I'm reading it correctly... the $49 or $99 dollars is for an UPGRADE not a full 'package' bootable/clean install copy of the OS

If your running XP you can do a clean install of Windows 7 for the $ 49 price. Sounds like a winner to me. I never went to vista so it's a win win situation for me.
From the Microsoft Store web site. "If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications."
