View Full Version : OTA locals show no program info
On my 722, the locals show up in the guide, but for all times it just says "Digital service" or something generic like that. As a result, it's tough to create timers, figure out what's coming up, etc.
My locals are in a town that's not on Dish network, so does Dish only push down guide info for locals that it offers? Or is there anyone out there who has an off air antenna in an area where dish does not offer locals, but you still get guide info?

You will not get guide data for local channels if you do not subscribe to them, and generally there is no guide data for channels not on Dish Network. For example, I can get OTA channels from Tijuana in San Diego, but show no programing info, even when I was subscribed to Dish Network locals. However, OTA subchannels to subscribed locals may or may not have guide data when you do subscribe, if they get the info from Tribune News Services.
Dish just leaves you with (3) options.
Option 1 sign up for locals with Dish to get the guide data.
Option 2, buy a weekly TV Guide.
Option 3, go on line to Dish Networks site and look up the times and dates for local shows and write them down and keep your list close by.

I believe option 1 is not in play because Dish does not offer his locals.

Depending on your TV..... you may be better off hooking the OTA antenna direct to the television set, particularly if one of your OTA channels happens to be PBS.
If your TV supports onscreen TV Guide, the info will auto-download from your local PBS station and then display using the 'guide' button on your TV remote, if so equipped.
Some sets support this and some don't. I know for a fact that most of the Mitsubishi DLP sets support it. Cannot speculate about the others. I think some of the Sony Bravia models do as well.
.
FWIW, I've got one set of locals via Dish Network and OTA locals from a completely different location. The on screen guide shows guide info for the OTA locals I get, as well as the other location via Dish Network. So methinks you can get guide info for two different cities/zip codes. All I did was scan for local channels and they then appeared in the guide. I also think you can get guide info for OTA locals, even if you don't get any locals via Dish Network. (vip722k)
Some of my locals don't offer guide data. Even my simple OTA receiver gets no guide data for them.
It is 100% the responsibility of the station to send the data to Dish in a format Dish can accept. Some stations don't care enough about digital TV to do that. I don't know this is your problem, but I know why mine are just "digital service" in the guide.
Dish Network gets guide data from Tribune Media Services (TMS), so generally if zap2it.com (http://www.zap2it.com) has the listings for a particular channel, Dish Network will have the correct listings eventually.

OK, the Zap2It reply has me confused.
I have no HD locals through Dish, but I can pick them up OTA with an ant.
Zap2It shows my Dish listings including the OTA channels.
If I have a 722K and the OTA module, will I get guide info for my OTA channels? How will my OTA channels be listed in the guide.
<Sorry, just trying to get everything straight in my head before I upgrade from my 522>
Thanks!

I personally can't answer if the local guide shows up for sure since I do get locals through Dish.
I can say that the locals show up as "yellow" channels with an antenna icon next to them instead of green or red like the regular ones do. they are listed as 4-1, 4-2, 5-1, 5-2 and so on. They also appear in the 7000 range where they are mapped down from. Makes setting up dish passes interesting since it can look like a new episode on more than one channel at a time. I don't want to confuse you more, so just remember that a pass could end up with not what you thought you would get. Most of the time it is fantastic. Every now and then, not so perfect.

PaulIf you subscribe to your local channels you will receive guide info, if you do not subscribe, the guide will list "Digital Service" with no info whatsoever.
The OTA will be in the guide at the map down location and be colored yellow instead of the very light blue.

OK, placed the order. We'll see what happens.

Well, my installer didn't have the OTA module, but a quick call to my CSR resulted in an overnight of the module to me. The install was a snap with the instructions.
Most of my OTA digitals are mapped, but some of the obscure PBS ones are not. I'll have to read up here to see how to do this. Any pointers?
Thanks!

DirecTV seems to now block PSIP data stream with regard to OTA HD channels in the guide. The H20's used to display this but many CE's ago they removed it's ability... I don't know why. (Yes, this sucks.)
PBS was my local that didn't have guide data. I talked to a few places, and finally talked to the PBS station. It took them months, but they accepted that it was their problem up front, and finally fixed it.
My other locals could care less.
