View Full Version : Will I notice a change in speed by going with cable
Hey, all, just decided to drop qwest for internet and phone. The speed i have with Qwest is 7 meg and with cable it will be 5 mb. I always thought cable was faster than broadband-i am not really a tech guy just wanted someone to explain it a little better. I am going with cable for phone-have a friend who works at qwest and i guess they are losing a lot of land lines abt 50 percent. Max.
Yes you will notice a change in speed but it looks like it will be slower whit cable especially if you have fiber. Here is what i got,Comcast internet 46 bucks, up to 15 down, (key words up to).
I really cant check how fast it is because they use powerbost which works on the first 10mb so it showes really fast on speed tests.
On phone i have Vonage 25 bucks a month which i an happy whit.
Probably best to leave the internet alone.

Cable is broadband.
It has been my experience that cable tends to be faster than DSL.
Fiber, I dunno?
YMMV

You can use the comcast speed test at this link to give you a true indication of your speed as it doesn't take into consideration the so called "powerboost" effect.

depends on area.. cable is shared with neighbors, dsl tends to be more one-on-one..
in my case the dsl was faster..
when cable 1st came into my area it was blazing fast, then it slowed drasticaly as they added subs..

Thanks that is more like it ,this is what i got
Down 6849 kbs
Up 5827 kbs
Why are you getting a comcast 5 meg tier and then asking why it isn't faster?
Comcast also has 12 meg, 16 meg, and 22 meg tiers :nono2::nono2::nono2::nono2:
You won't get faster internet by simply going to cable. The advantage cable has over dsl is this:
ADSL is limited to 7 megs
ADSL 2+ is limited to 20 megs down, 768 kb up.
VDSL is better, but not avaialable widely.
Cable's docsis is capable of 38 megs down (docsis 1.1 and 2.0), 9 megs up (docsis 1.1), 27 megs up (docsis 2.0).
Docsis 3.0 can have up to 304 megs down, 108 megs up with 8 channels.
Cable isn't inheritely faster, it just has the faster speeds and can use more bandwidth right now.
All depends on the package you are on. Neither is faster or slower depending on the package and what is available to you.
I personally prefer DSL as it usually has much more stable speeds where as cable can go down in speed at peak times and such depending on how many people subscribe in your area (on your node).
