The National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative told the Federal Communications Commission that DirecTV's request to move satellites - an effort the satellite TV company said will better serve customers in Hawaii - is really a scheme to advance its litigation with the cooperative.
Last week, DirecTV asked for permission to move two satellites - DirecTV 1 and DirecTV 6 - to improve Hawaii service. In its FCC letter, the NRTC said DirecTV could enhance its Hawaii service without launching a new satellite - DirecTV 7S - as well as moving the two other satellites simply by transmitting core programming services from an existing satellite, DirecTV 1R.
"Rather than promptly providing a full package of programming to Hawaii, it appears that DirecTV has chosen to embark on a prolonged and elaborate 'shell game' by delaying, obfuscating and misrepresenting its intentions to the commission for more than three years," NRTC said.
DirecTV didn't have a specific comment on the NRTC allegation. The company said the purpose of its FCC request to move satellites is to enhance its service to Hawaii.
DirecTV, Pegasus and NRTC are in litigation concerning NRTC access to premium programming services.
