I know that the 508 remote is UHF. But, does anyone know if the remote and 508 are also IR? I ask this becuase it seems when i point the remote at the box the response seems to faster. Maybe I'm just being silly? Any thoughts.

THe UHF remotes from Dish also act as IR remotes, for Dish receivers as well as for certain TV's VCR's and other miscellaneous amplifiers/ A/V receivers.

Question is whether the 508 recieves both UHF and IR?

Take your UHF antenna off and find out - but I bet it does...

Yes it does.
I have one of the Sony RM-AV300 IR remotes and it controls everything I have including my 508 and 6000 recievers.

All of the current UHF receivers also transmit IR. The older receivers such as the 4000 only transmitted UHF whereas the 4700/4900, 501, 508, and 721 transmit UHF and IR at the same time.

Probably explains why the batteries go dead so quickly.

I smell a CPSC Recall?

I also have also noticed the batteries go dead quicker in the UHF remotes than the IR remotes and I do believe its due to the UHF and IR emmitting at the same time and also UHF may take more power to transmit, not sure.

The dedicated remotes (older solid black remotes or the smaller ones issued with the 2800's a while back - not the blue button universal remotes) in which you cannot change the remote address operates receivers of any remote address so that is one that you definitely want to make sure you do not use if you have more than one receiver in a room.

I do not understand how the previous post relates to the discussion?
Loose Cannon, does it really matter. The topic was about remotes, the reply was informative , and was appreciated. So go shoot your wad elsewhere

Snagel,
I was not "shooting my wad," but just trying to understand if there was some kind of issue with the black remotes. I'm sure Jacob S didn't take offense and neither should you. (BTW, Jacob S sorry if you took offense). Now, Mr. Snagel if you want to be a jerk go elsewhere.
Thanks, Loose.
If you set zero as the remote address on any DISH remote except the Dishplayer it transmits all codes not just the 1 your receiver is set to accept. Have fun with your neighbors UHF receiver set yours to zero and change his channels.

This very issue (the dedicated black button remote on the 2700 series receivers) was driving me crazy for awhile as well. The interim solution was to cover up the 4700's IR receiver with aluminum foil - but that also blocked the IR transmitter. In the end I got one of the UHF conversion kits for the 2700 - best investment made on that. You get a Blue Button addressable remote, that does UHF to a pyramid receiver that converts to IR. Black Button has been retired in my household.
And as far as battery life is concerned - I don't have any issues with EITHER Blue Button remote. It's just that Dish sends out the units with really crappy, nearly dead batteries.

That is really good information about setting the remote address to 0 in case someone forgot what address their receiver was operating on. I remember seeing that posted a good while back.
Sometimes people misunderstand others online and also some, including myself, get off topic.
