View Full Version : What classifies as an RV?

Ok, I checked the SHIVA page and the definition of an RV for distant nets is really broad. It even sounds like my SUV would qualify if I use it for camping and hook up my dish to the cigarette lighter! Anybody have any idea of how picky satellite providers are on what qualifies?

Thanks! Sounds like you just submit a vehicle registration and see what happens. I wonder if it needs to say "RV" on it?

Try it and let us know if it works out. Might start a whole new trend instead of "moving" maybe "R-ving".

personally, i've been on the lookout for someone's burned out shell for a couple of years now just to buy the title...

Sure will. My suv is single chasis ( i think), self propelled, less than 400 feet, and can be used for camping, and travel. Now, permanently attaching the dish may be a challenge. but I will figure it out :)

It must say (whatever your state uses for RV) on the registration.

Thanks. There is a type box on the form. My suv says "UT", so that may be a problem! Maybe I will just try waivers first, then "move" if that doesn't work.

This sure does make junk campers and/or their titles of value when they were not before. With all the locals they are adding in additional cities this may not be needed as much in a way for those that just want to pick up some networks but would still be needed for those that travelled because some would not be able to pick the signal up out of the spotbeam.

I think if you read what is required a little closer, it says a copy of the state registration is required, not the title. You can't register anything other than a road worthy vehicle.

Oops, I misread it. I was thinking of a different post where they were talking about buying a junk camper and using the title from that along with what I had read in posts last year. Was a registration always a requirement or did it used to be a title? I thought I heard a while back that it was a title but I could be mistaken. Also do they require you to resubmit a registration yearly?

Then I could swear that it was permanently attached and that it would never be used by any stationary receivers.

I too seem to remember the title being mentioned at one time. As just a guess, there probably has to be a current registration on file - but even if that is true, who is going to follow up on that? Also, at least in some states, a van (or possibly other vehicle) if equiped with items such as a refrigerator and cooking appliance, plus usually some type of "bathroom" can be registered as an RV. As I write this, my brother in law is telling me a "bathroom" could be one of those small portable toilets.

Pop up campers have RV titles. I tried this by getting a old title. The state for some reason reconstructed the title and it came back trailer:( Unusable I wasted about $60 in fees and plate costs.

Looking at SHIVA, I would think your trailer registration would be fine:

HUD regulations (Title 24 Code of Federal Regulations, Section 3282.8) define "recreational vehicle" as a vehicle that is: (1) built on a single chassis; (2) 400 square feet or less when measured at the largest horizontal projections; (3) self-propelled or permanently towable by a light duty truck; and (4) designed primarily not for use as a permanent dwelling but as temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, travel, or seasonal use.

Your camper is definitely towable. Although if dish is really adamant about have "RV" somewhere on the registration form, then that may be a problem. But I would think they would lose a lot of qualified customers if this were the case.

Is dish really that strict about the registration having the work "RV" or "recreational vehicle" on it?
