I decided it was time to register after viewing all the good information here for some time.
Got a question about hard drive noise.
How much does one hear from a 508 reciever. Can you have it in the same room? Thinking about jumping into the PVR equipment.
Thanks

How sensitive are your ears? It is a relative thing some people are more sensitive than others. I would not recommend it for a bedroom, but I have one in my bedroom. For most people they will not hear it as long as something is going on in the room.

Noise aside....the 501 PVR has CHANGED our viewing habits immesely. My wife will not leave DISH now that we have a PVR. The TIVO is more expensive so we probably won't be going back to DirecTV.

That being said.....

We've subscribed to the "Home Plan" (basically renting the equipment)...and we are on our 3rd 501 PVR.

#1 and the current unit has a terrible noise (It's like your computer's hard drive being booted up constantly). My hearing is sensitive to low frequencies so it probably bothers me more than most.

#2 was virtually silent...but also only lasted a few months.

Being on the "Home plan" only gives you "reconditioned units" I guess.
