View Full Version : HD Antenna
What type of HD antenna should I get? I want to be able to access other local channels that DTV doesn't carry.
Thanks.
There are literally dozens of threads on this subject. I'd recommend that you start searching by searching for "OTA antenna".
Another handy resource: http://www.tvfool.com
Here is another very helpful source for chosing an antenna. It allows you to put in your address or just zip code and it will pull up all channels broadcasting in your zone and then recommend the type and size of antenna to buy. http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Welcome.aspx

FYI, don't fall for paying more for an "HD" antenna. There is no such thing. A pair of $5 rabbit ears may work just fine if you're close enough to the towers. I have a 20 year old rusting hulk on my roof that works just perfect for getting HD OTA. There is nothing "special" needed to get HD OTA.
http://www.antennaweb.org is also a good place to start. Here it will tell you how far you are from the channels and what type of antenna you need (UHF/VHF and size).

Finding out where your towers are and how far away is the 1st step. Antennaweb or tvfool is where I look. If your 50 miles or more you may have some trouble. In that case a channel master 4228 will preform good for the cost.Ihave tried others antennas at 2 times the cost with no better preformance. A booster preamp is a must. Dont settle for a cheap amp the noise the amp creates will kill the digital signal. Channel master 7777 or 7778 are good along with the Winegard AP-8780. I deal with the fringe area stuff all the time. The signal can be eratic at times. Hopefully you live 30mi or less from the towers it will be easy then

Don't fall for the "HD Antenna" label. It's still an analog signal that's being received so any good VHF/UHF antenna will work.

Check out both Antenna Web and TVFool... then I always recommend people buying/trying antennas with internal first, then external... and if you can buy from a local store that has a liberal return policy so that you can try a few kinds and keep just the one that works best for you.
