I just found out my friend got DirecTV last month so I asked him how he liked it. This was his response:

"I think it stinks that on one box I can’t dvr one thing and watch another. I feel like I’ve had that same problem with VCRs dating back to the 80’s. Apparently with Satellite dishes you need 2 cable outputs coming out of your wall to do that and I wasn’t going to have the guy tear into the ceiling and wall in my new house to do that. I had Comcast Cable in SLP and they have the technology to do that with one box and a single outlet."

What are the odds that he got a dish with a SWM? If he didn't what are his options for getting one?

The install was in a suburb of Minneapolis and he got a HD DVR but I'm not sure which model.

With one receiver, I doubt he got a SWMline dish. He could always purchase one at Solid Signal or the like.

So right now he has 1 HD DVR and 1 standard receiver. He's not sure how many lines are coming into his basement from the dish; he thinks just 1, but wouldn't he need 2 to supply both boxes?

If he were to buy a SWM-8 would he need 4 lines coming in from the dish? Does a standard receiver work off a SWM-8?

He also has a 3rd TV that he is currently not using but he will want to shortly.

Thanks

If he only has one line coming from the dish, then it is a SWMLine dish. If he has four coming in, then he has a 5-LNB. A SWM-8 will require a 5-LNB dish (4 lines) to function properly. A SWM-8 has three legacy ports which can supply any legacy receivers, the new receivers (SD or HD) can receive input from a SWM-8 or SWMLine dish.

It sounds like he has a non-SWM dish, and would not allow the installer to run the second line to the DVR.

So if he has 1 line coming in he has a SWMLine dish.

If he has 4 lines coming in he can get a SWM-8 and easily get to where he needs to be.

If he has 2 lines coming in, he has some work ahead of him.

Does that sum it up?
