The Ohio Council of Retail Merchants and its president, John C. Mahaney, recently wrote about a proposed tax on satellite TV services, saying the levy isn't such a great idea for the state's consumers and businesses.

Writing in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Mahaney said if the number of satellite TV subscribers in Ohio declines due to the tax, it could hurt businesses across the state and would lead to less revenue than state officials expected to gain with the tax.

Mahaney also said, "A majority of satellite owners in Ohio are from rural areas where cable is not an option. This tax would be unfair to rural Ohioans who do not have a cable alternative available to them ... they would have no choice but to bear the burden of the higher satellite subscription fees as a result of the proposed tax."

Mahaney said more than 650,000 Ohio households get satellite TV, representing 16.5 percent of the state's TV households.
