Walmart last week began selling Magnavox's NB530MGX Blu-ray Disc player for $98, according to Format War Central. The model's MSRP was originally $168, though it had been on sale on Father's Day weekend for as low as $128, the site said.

Actually, as many as 3 different Magnavox models have been seen at Walmart over the past 30 days, 2 of which were $98 and another at $128. They all have very similar model numbers.

In any case, these are all pretty good started Blu Ray units, and running on v1.1 profiles (on BD-Live, such as found on Profile 2.0) - which should not be a big deal for many buyers, since BD Live is not briskly taking off so far.

Good deals to be found indeed. :)

Whenever I shop for electronics at Wal-Mart, Target or even sometimes Best Buy, I feel like I'm shopping in the junk aisle.

Over the weekend I went looking for a combo DVD recorder/VHS so I can transfer some old VHS tapes to DVD. Everywhere I went I saw the same models. A Sony, a Samsung and a Magnavox. All three models had major issues according to the reviews on Amazon. Nobody had the highly rated Toshiba models.

I personally would think twice before buying a $99 Blu-Ray player. It sounds tempting but you have to wonder what sort of quality you are getting.

Thank goodness for Amazon. :)

Interesting...I actually own 2 Panasonic as well as 1 Magnavox Blu Ray Players.

All work well (and have for some time now).

All do what they are designed to do and have virtually no performance problems, nor prevent me from watching any Blu Ray disk of my choosing.

The Panny's cost me $278 and $269, while the Magnavox is my "3rd unit", and cost me $128 last year on Black Friday.

I find that I get equal value out of all 3. While the $128 Magnavox unit has limitations on some of the features that are more advanced in the Panny's, the Magnavox does what it is supposed to do, and does so reliably.

In actuality, all three units perform to expectations, and have their own value to how they are used and what I paid for them.

Don't underestimate the $98 or $128 units - they perform well as basic Blu Ray players.

:eek2: Wow, DVD players did not come down anywhere near this fast in pricing. Although BD players did hold steady for the first few years.

DO NOT touch the Samsung model with a 10' pole. Don't even go in the same aisle as the machine, something may rub off on you. I wouldn't even enter the same room. I made the horrible mistake of purchasing one of those pieces of crap and all it does is produce nice, flat, round, shiny coasters. It hasn't produced ONE DVD yet. I should have checked Amazon feedback first.

I've heard the same thing about alot of "issues" with the Samsung Blu Ray units.

I will wait until the disks are the same price as non blu-ray before I take the plunge.

That's just about happened already....you can get many Blu ray disks for under $15 these days, and a fair number under $18 for newer releases.

Amazon.com and others regularly discount BD disks.

Those prices are 1/2 what they were just a year ago.

For $2 - $3 or so a disk on average difference, seeing a Blu Ray HD version of a movie is well worth the tiny cost variation.

I got the Panasonic DMR-EZ48 combo unit which copies both ways and has tuner built in also. Seems to work ok copying family VHS stuff. Of course it's not HD!

Agreed...I picked up RoboCop Blu-ray for $10 and Watchmen Blu-ray for $20 at one of our area Wal-Mart stores earlier today...I also picked up one of the Magnavox players for $98 while I was there too. :)

I think they made a boo-boo on the Watchmen price point...shelf price was $25.97...it scanned for $19.97 at checkout.

I got the $98.00 players two days ago. I'm so glad because I saved two hundred bucks compare to the Samsung I was going to get. This thing (Magnovox) shows great no problems at all so far. I guess name brand doesn't mean anything but a marketing ploy for consumers with item like this. I really don't think the cost of a Blue ray mean better PQ. Maybe there are more features for more money, but I'm still waiting for the angle function to work on my old DVD'S.

Let's face it....at $98....if the Magnavox Blu Ray player works fine for 2 or more years....its a steal at the price, and a bargain in the least.

Mine is already approach 9 months old and has performed flawlessly, and even recently got a firmware update (not sure for what, becuase all BD disks thrown at it have worked fine).

At these prices...its virtually throw-away electronics down the road. Money well spent now.
