after 10 years with DirecTV we switched to Dish this past week because the programming was cheaper.

one question though: i subscribe to my locals now (Youngstown OH) but do not seem to get any surround sound on those channels. when i had DirecTV i had east/west nets and received surround sound (just Dolby Pro Logic NOT 5.1 since i didn't/don't have a high def sat receiver or TV).

any idea of why there is no rear channel sound from those local stations? any one else here receive the Youngstown locals in standard def with the same situation?

thanks.

The problem must be your local stations, not dish network.

Evidently the east/west nets were in surround sound and your local stations arent. Send your stations an email and see what they say.

dennis -- yeah, might as well at least ATTEMPT to get an answer from Dish, for whatever it might be worth.

by the way...is that a TAMA kit in your avatar? with my eyeballs it looks like their logo.

I do not get surround from Local SD(Youngstown OH), but I do receive surround with OTA on locals.

i disconnected my converter box since i'm getting locals now on Dish. one less thing i have to switch. strange though that there is no surround on those channels....it stinks actually!!

don't know why there wouldn't be through sat but it does OTA. i would think then that that would be on Dish's part, no?

You get surround sound on locals because they broadcast their HD signal with DD5.1, but SD signal ordinarily only comes with DD stereo, not 5.1, IIRC.

Send an email to dishquality@echostar.com (or is it dishquality@dishnetwork.com ?) - try one of the 2

What is probably happening now (post June 12) -
Dish is picking up the OTA HDTV signal, then centercutting the video and stripping out anything but base Left and right audio for your SD channels.
How's your "center audio" sounding (typically speech) ?

Assuming Dish wants to use the bandwidth - they could be providing a Dolby ProLogic audio (granted, not as good as DD5.1, but still surround).

If you want to do alot of reading about Dolby (find out how it works, what translates to what, etc.) - I'd suggest it. It could also make your understanding of what your A/V receiver is doing and what the various adjustments do.

I ought to check my own post June 12 SD locals to see what kind of audio I'm getting...

Dolby Pro Logic will often create rear channel sound where none exists. That could be why you were hearing it previously.

MTS stereo went away with NTSC signals.

Neither DISH Network nor DIRECTV SD non-DVRS do not feature Dolby surround sound capability of any kind. You have to step up to the DVRs or HD equipment to get support for more than two channels.

I beg your pardon - I have a 4900 that supports DD5.1 over a TOSLINK. I'm not currently using it , but I still have it.

You are probably correct on the CURRENT receivers however. Certainly the DVR 510 and 625 I also have support DD5.1 as well.

yes, i'm also running my 625 via toslink and many other channels do have surround sound via Pro Logic but of course no Dolby Digital. it's just my locals that have no surround, dang it!!

I'll let you slide then on the DSR-100, the combination sat rcvr / D-VHS deck that recorded digital video and was the first consumer device to record DD5.1, given that it's been obsoleted by the G3 smart cards and that the common definition of DVR includes a HDD.

4900's originally sold as 4700 are still out there too - that's what mine is...

Does it have Optical out?

Certainly - yes, and UHF capable - I've been an Echostar customer for a LONG time... like when the Dish 500 was just coming out as the standard dish (Oct 2000) .

I am having a problem with my 622 receiver, it is not passing any SS 5.1, local OTA or from dish. In fact I subscribe to all the movie channels and none of them are being sent in SS 5.1 today. No soround sound at all. The info on all the HD movie channels, HBO,Cinemax, Starz, etc, shows all the shows in stereo. What is wrong with with dish. These channels used to all be in SS 5.1. Anybody know what is wrong.
Ear;
