Will the Jackson, Mississippi DMA reach Vicksburg? Also my brother lives just across the border and was wondering if he could get them.

The Jackson DMA ends at the river, so he is in the Monroe DMA. The only way to get the locals is to "move" his address to inside the DMA.

So if he was able to get some type of Vicksburg address the spot beam would get to him. He is less than 5 miles into Louisiana.

There is no Jackson spotbeam yet anyway. Even when there is, I'm sure it would work, just make sure he has a multi-satellite dish.

Thanks Chris you replied on both of the forums.
The Jackson, Ms Local Channel market is going to be very strict for people trying to receive these channels. You Must Live in Certain Designated Zip Codes to receive Jackson, Ms Locals. If you are over into Louisianna you will be out of luck as the previous poster said The Local Jackson, Ms Designated Market Area Ends Right at The Mississippi River. Vicksburg Folks I think will be eligble. But if you are in Louisanna. No Dice.

What is the deal with the "select zips only?" I have noticed that the northern Jackson DMA counties can't get them via D* but can get them on E*.
Does this have something to do with the NRTC, other markets? What is the deal?
I don't know But on Direc TV's Local Channel information Channel I believe 999 It clearly states that Jackson, Ms Locals will only be available in Select Zip Codes. If you aren't in any of the Zip Codes for Jackson. It looks as if you are going to be out of luck. Same goes for up here in Northeast, Ms. My Local Cable company Comcast Cable Carries every one of the Memphis Local Channels and Tupelo, Ms Channel 9 WTVA. Demographically I am closer to Tupelo But I qualify for Memphis, Tn Locals. It looks as if Direc Tv is going to keep me from seeing Columbus- Tupelo when they go on the air only to get Memphis. People less than 20 miles away in the county just south of me will be able to receive Columbus- Tupelo Via Direc TV But I and everyone else in my county who have Direc TV Probably won't get them. Go Figure. I think the Satellite Home Viewers Act Needs to be changed and people need to be given more Leniency so they can see there Local Channels Via There DBS System. It Needs to be less strict.
The reason that D* only serves "select ZIP coes only" is that D* uses the Nielsen DMA maps for the current year. E* uses the ones from 1999.
The SHVIA law allows either the 1999 maps (when the law passed) or the current year maps. Quite simply, E* opted to not have to keep current on the maps, which will benefit them in Yazoo, Issaquena, Sharkey, Humphries, Holmes, and Attala counties that get Jackson, while D* doesn't serve them. Except for Attala, these counties are probably in the Greenwood-Greenville market this year. Attala is probably in the Columbus, MS market to be available in July.
Jackson isn't the only market with the "in select zip codes only" stipulation. Here in the Roanoke/Lynchburg market, my county was left out in the cold regarding local channels on Direct and nobody will say why. Result---people are changing in droves to DISH. I switched to DISH myself and am very happy with my 7 Roanoke channels and DISH in general. In my opinion this "select zip codes" thing has nothing to do with changing DMA definitions. Our county has always been in the Roanoke DMA. But it is also true that our local D* provider is a NRTC affiliate. NRTC is in dispute with D* and Rupport has already opened fire on them. Or perhaps the spot beam used for ROanoke locals by D* does not reach this far. If that is true, a very poor choice by D*. THey can do better than that!

Moedog, what county are you in?
I wondered about that, too...and I tend to think it is the spot beam causing your problems. The Roanoke/Lynchburg market is a HUGE market geographically...stretching from a few counties just outside the Bristol/Tri-Cities, TN/VA market, up into parts of WV and past Lynchburg. I bet you are in another market's spot beam (i.e. wherever Pittsburgh, PA is, etc.) and that D* can't physically get the signal to you.
Or rather, won't be able to get the signal to you, since right now the R/L locals are on the national beam. They'll eventually move them to a spot beam. And D* will NOT duplicate a market's spot beam channels to another spot beam...it's a waste of space (unless, perhaps, the CORE of the market is split geographically by the beam).
Anyone have the link to that site that shows which D* locals are on which spot beam? I lost it.
