Just received a complimentary HD DVR, an upgrade for my HR 10-250, requested a HR23 but received HR20, I have called cs 3 times and have been told system won't allow another dvr to be sent out because it was complimentary, already have 2 HR20's and was looking forward to the larger drive, anyone else in the same sitiuation, how did you resolve?

I don't think that you have any option as to which model of HR you get, especially since this one was a "complimentary" upgrade. I have a feeling that unless something goes wrong with one of your HR's and you're on the protection plan, you might have to stay with the HR20.

The only way to guarantee an HR23 is to buy from a retail outlet. You could add an external eSata drive to the HR20 if space is your only issue.

Went through pretty much the same thing with a complimentary upgrade of an H10. They offered an H2x but sent an refurbished HR20. I called about the "mistake" and they said just to keep the HD DVR but wouldn't send me one of the newer models. Since I already had DVR service there wasn't any additional cost to me so I gave up and kept the HR20. It's my second DVR and it's not used as a DVR often so it's worked out just fine.

To say it again, there is no way to request a particular model from DIRECTV.

What is the full model number? HR20-xxx?

There is a way. The CMG can send you any model that's still available. Takes a little longer and they try to get you to pay for it, but in the end, I've not paid for them and each time I've gotten the model I wanted and each time it was a brand new, never activated model.

Takes quite a while to go thru the process of reaching the CMG and then convincing them you don't want a random HR. But I've always ended up with the model I wanted.

Sorry, Stuart, I could have sworn I sent this as a PM to you.

Actually Rich is correct on both counts. He did send it to me and he's right about case management. That being said, getting to case management can be tough in and of itself.

My only thought would be that if it was complimentary then that's pretty good. A free HR can't really be a bad thing. So to the OP congrats on the free HR

I thought I did send it by PM, and you're right, you need a legitimate beef to get referred to the CMG (Case Management Group). "My HR keeps rebooting", isn't gonna work.

I have the PP and if I can't get a problem solved thru them after a certain amount of calls, they refer me to the CMG. I don't know how that works if you aren't a member of the Protection Plan.

It takes a long time, too. But once they start helping you, they stick with you until you're satisfied. Very knowledgeable people (yup, D*'s actually got some people who understand you and listen to you), and the last woman who helped me actually owned an HR.

I've gotten at least three free HRs over the years and it's a good feeling, isn't it?

In these times anything that's free is a good thing. :)

You should feel lucky that you received a 20-700. Minus the bigger hard drive, it's probably the best HR they made.

I am curious if the AM21 works better then the HR20 with the OTA tuners built in but still I wont complain. I love my HR20-100.

And with how cheap large hard drives are to day, take the HR20 and run, adding a 1 or 2TB drive is gravy after that.

I finally executed the complimentary upgrade on my last 2-HR10's (wife was a tivo holdout) and the new boxes arrived today and they were refurbished HR20-700's.

I thought the odds of getting a HR20 was remote at best since there have been 3 generation of boxes since. I guess the free upgrade pool comes from reconditioned older boxes and only 'paying customers' get the newer equipment?

I can tell you from experience, take the above advice and add an external drive before you begin recording, I have almost filled mine up 9% left, mostly for my kids and some shows for me and the wife.

HR20-700

Incredible. Absolutely incredible. If it works, and I hope it does, you just got the best HR D* has put out. I've seen several posts that are similar to yours and even one where a guy got a new one. Never activated. It never ceases to amaze me how lucky some people are.

Good luck,

Rich

Don't try to rationalize it, what they do with replacements makes little sense at best. If your replacements work (don't believe that nonsense about "refurbishing"), you've just hit the jackpot. I'm convinced that the 20-700s are the best of the HRs.

True, but be careful, some eSATAs don't work with the 20s. For instance the WD My Book only works with the 21s. I have a Cavalry 2TB and two Seagate Xtreme 1.5TBs on three of my four 20-700s and they work perfectly. You'll get better performance out of a larger HDD than, say, a 1TB or smaller. Stick with the ones that we know work and you'll be better off.

Be happy with the HR20-700. Except for the small hard drive it is probably the best unit they've made.
