I was looking at my account on DIRECTV.com today and decided to take a look at the "add a receiver" option and it showed this:
HD Receiver$99.00 each
Get ONE FREE DVR or HD receiver upgrade.*

&

HD DVR Receiver$199.00 each Get ONE FREE HD DVR receiver upgrade with the CHOICE XTRA™ and PREMIER™ packages.*

When I go to the checkout screen it shows the full prices though.
I don't get this. Im logged in so it can't be a new customer offer. I would like to upgrade my Guest bedroom from HD to HD DVR for free if possible. I already have Choice XTRA. What's the deal???

I checked my account and I have the same offer showing. I think the key word is upgrade. It appears you can upgrade an SD receiver to HD or HD DVR, not just add one for free.

And when I try to select one of them, I get this message:
"Sorry, you can't add this item to your shopping cart
The item you are trying to add to your cart must be professionally installed"

I also have the same offer. As RACJ2 stated, it looks like it is for an upgrade only. I think what happens though is even though you click the link for Upgrade Receiver, it still adds it to you cart as if you were adding on a new receiver. I think this is the case since it stated my new monthly bill would be $84.98, which is $15 more than it is now, after including the monthly lease fee ($5) and HD service ($10). If I was upgrading a receiver, there wouldn't be a new monthly lease fee as it would take the place of the current receiver I am upgrading.

I get that message too if I have something in my cart that is allowed to be self-installed. Go to your cart first and clear everything out of it. Then try adding the receiver.

I saw this in my account, too, with similar results as the OP. Only difference between my situation and his is that I'm still on a grandfathered plan, not Choice Extra, so changing to that plan would be an actual upgrade (and a $5 per month increase for me).

I spent about an hour on the phone today trying to find a rep who could help me obtain this deal, but to no avail. They were all scratching their heads, too . . . .

I can't even find what the "*" refers to in those "offers" - where's the "fine print" DTV?

Has anyone found out what this is really about?

I called about this (there's an asterisk next to the offer, but no explanation of what the asterisk is) - I was told this is the offer for new customers. He checked to see if I qualify anyway, said that he could offer me the HD DVR for half off. I had thought it was an incentive to upgrade from the TC+ to the Choice Xtra ($3 more/mo.), but no..., so I continued by saving the $3/mo by keeping TC+, and no HD DVR purchase.

I initially had it, checked last night and it was gone, but here's my question...

If this was a 'new customer only' offer, as has been posted a couple of times, why would they have been programming anything for that section of the website anyway because to register on directv.com you have to have an account number already???

I saw it on Friday and called D* because I just upgraded from an older package to the newer Choice extra so technically and according to what was stated On-line, I qualified. The CSR even said I did, but had no way of entering the code for the upgrade to the HD DVR; this issue is pending review:confused: It was sent up the chain and "someone will call you in a few days" WAITING:mad:

It was clearly an error on someone's part as it was the new customer information for ordering equipment. The fact that it's gone just confirms that.

Well just got off the phone with a CSR that really was trying to get to the bottom of this and she was not able to go any further than to say exactly what the priovious CSR had mentioned about sending this on to a supervisor for review.
She did mention I should send an e-mail to the powers that be, we'll see what happens with that. I think they just posted the wrong info on the website and are now getting a backlash for the big red FREE sign in these offers. Heck, FREE HDDVR when you upgrade a package as I did really gets your attention.:eek2:
