I need some assistance with options on extending a new installation into an upper floor. I see two possibles:

1) Extend SWM8 connections from the mechanical room to the 2nd floor.
2) Drop another SWM8 into the attic of the 2nd floor from the outside termination.

I'm hoping to take the 2nd connection from the dish into the attic. Any connection from the basement requires fishing to the outside and an exterior run.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

We need to know more about your current installation.
What dish do you have? Since you have an existing SWM8, I assume a regular Slimline with four outputs.

So you should already have four drops from the dish.

But, your second picture shows two lines with only one continuing (I assume inside). If you have the SWMLine dish with one output where are you going to get the second line?

What receivers do you have and where are they located?

Thanks for the reply.

I know the dish is a Slim Line, but not what type. I have the dual wire coming from it. The visible line continues into the basement as you thought. If the dish is a SWM single line, why would the installer run a dual cable. Is there an easy way to identify the dish without getting on the roof?

I have 1 hr-22 hd dvd and 3 x D12-500 receivers. Three of the receivers are connected from the basement power module. The fourth receiver is uninstalled and needs the cabling in the 2nd story.

Any other questions that I can answer?

I doubt you have a SWM* switch but rather a SWM LNB.
The reason for the dual line is that the tech doesn't have single+ground wire.
In order to pass a QC he uses dual+ground. Your option at this point is to run a line from the SWM splitter to the upstairs.

I'm fairly certain it is a SWM LNB. I have a SWS8-WB splitter in my mech room. Can I run a line from the splitter in my mech room to the 2nd floor and split it in the 2nd story attic?

Yes, but make sure to use the proper splitters, use solid copper RG6 and don't go over 8 tuners.

Can you elaborate on the splitting? This is what I'm thinking:

LNB -> SWS8-WB -->Upstairs->Splitter -> Receiver

Is that doable? If so what splitters do I use?

D* specifies 2-2150Mhz but most if not all 5-2150Mhz rated ones will work.
Do keep an eye out for the power passing side but if all splitters are behind the PI there is no need to worry.

If you are only hooking up 1 rcvr upstairs, you do not need a splitter. Just run the line from the splitter downstairs and right to the rcvr.
