Many of us were disappointed when the HDPC-20 never made it to retail (with no public reason for this decision). Many of us use our computers to record TV shows, and it is to bad this unit is being kept from the public.

Anyway, if Directv does not provide this service, there is little doubt that others will step in and fill this void.

A good summary...with predictions...

The ability to build a powerful, storage intensive media center PC based around Windows Media Center has always held massive appeal for me. I have to say that were Dish Network to produce a viable tuner for Windows Media Center, I would be hard pressed to not factor that into a decision to switch. The cancellation (suspend?) of the HDPC20 wthout any comment or explanation was a major issue for someone like me, though perhaps not to many clients.

I used to be a DirecTV subscriber for more than 6 years. When Microsoft released Windows Media Center 2005, I understood its potential and canceled my DirecTV subscription and switched to cable. Our family really enjoys the benefits of which Windows Media Center 2005, Windows Vista Home Premium and soon Windows 7 Home Premium provides and had high hopes that we would once again be able to rejoin DirecTV with the release of the HDPC-20 but lost hope after the project was suspended.

We love being able to record 2SD & 2HD QAM channels at the same time (4SD & 4HD QAM with Windows 7) with a centralized storage location for all our media needs. Would love more HD channels but I'm not interested in purchasing an OEM cable card system from a limited number of CableLabs authorized PC resellers. Our media storage for Media Center has now grown over the years to 5.75TB. Being able to stop the show in one room and continue it in another without transferring (copying) a single file from one DVR to another is fantastic. My entire house is using a Windows Media Center PC along with 2 Xbox 360's as gaming/media extenders and wouldn't do it any other way.

I'm now looking forward to Draco from Dish Network.

While much of the article is vague, I still wonder how you record on computer with multiple inputs. I still wonder why, when the HDPC was working so good in tests, they canned the project. It may have been political, I doubt it was technical.

More likely tactical than political.
