I called this morning to get a replacement DVR after my Philips DirecTiVo died. I went to Best Buy first to get an R22 and there were none available in Az. The CSR said they were recalled. They're sending me an R16 "free of charge and no new commitment"
Not recalled, just discontinued I believe.

If the R22 was discontinued, what is the current model number for a networkable non-HD DVR? Thanks.

What SD DVR is there for folks who live in an area which only get MPEG4 locals?

I remember reading a post somewhere quoting from the directv forums that all new local72swap areas as of June 17th I believe are getting HR series DVRs installed. So now in MPEG 4 local swap markets HD DVRs are being installed.

I was able to use this program and upgrade to a HD receiver in the bedroom for free and with no extended commitment. Not sure from above is this will help you or not, but this is the page. Good luck!

Best Buy online now has R16s instead of R22s,so it has begun!.:eek2:

No new commitment? Must be a recent policy change at DirecTV.

So if I live in one of the listed cities can I trade my R22 for an HD DVR?

No. The idea is that if you get want an additional SD-DVR at this point in time, you will get an HD-DVR. The R22 is already able to receive an MPEG4 signal, unlike the R15/R16. With the discontinuation of the R22, DirecTV is left to installing HR2x series DVR's for SD customers that are in MPEG4 markets and want a new DVR.

If the OP has the PP, the replacement receiver would not trigger a commitment.

I did my locals swap last month, and thought I was lucky that my replacement DVR was listed as a HD-DVR on the paperwork.
glad I waited and got a HR23-700!

No policy change
without prot plan op will have a commitment

That what I was told, whether it's true is another story.

Since the OP stated he initially tried to get a replacement at Best Buy, I assumed he didn't have the PP.

So since I live in an MPEG4 and I want to add a DVR to my spare room that will get my locals my only option is $199.00 while people in non MPEG4 markets only have to pay $99... Not right
But wait it gets better, so to make it fair they sell me the HR22 for $99 and I activate it and since I already have HD access an those of you not in an MPEG4 market have to pay $199....
Wow thanks D* for taking the confusion out of that......
Maybe tonight I will call D* and order an SD DVR for a spare room that will pick up my locals and see what I get offered.......

Shoot why would my local Best Buy even carry an R16 since we are in an MPEG4 market????
I want to see that sign, DVR $99 id SD only $199 if you have HD, but it's the same DVR.....

Your local BB shouldn't be carrying R16s if your in a MPEG4 locals market but don't be surprised if you see one.Heck BB couldn't even get the information right on the R22s when they had them online.;)
Need to have you check and see what the price will be? I think it will be the HR2x price.:eek2:

online when I put my zip in the R16 and HR22 are listed and so is a SD and HD standard receiver but SD receivers are no good in my area.... DirectV doesn't install anything not HD capable in my area..

During the persistence to get my R-22 from D* (there is a way trust me, took a week) a blurb came across the mouths of one of the tech's/csr's that I was talking to saying the R-22 will be replaced by the R-23 soon enough but it's still in development. I don't know if that's of any benefit to this thread, but I'm not holding my breath, just keeping my eye's peeled :)

The R22 is only available in MPEG 4 local markets where a mpeg 4 capable dvr is needed to get local channels.
I think this has been discusssed previously... and IcedOmega is right. No commitment for local channel upgrades.

in this case this would be a mpeg 4 locals swap,(not the op's case, but matman's) therefore no committment, this is handled in the ordering system differently than a regular replacement/upgrade. And no, the csr cannot order a locals swap if you don't live in an mpeg 4 locals area....just in case anyone has any ideas

Looks like you would have two others choices.Go with an HR2x and you would have to pay the $10. HD Access Fee or check out Dish and their 625.It would seem that DirecTV is turning away from SD subscribers the R15/R16s cannot compare with the R22s or Dish's 625.:nono2:

To be honest I don't know why DirecTV could not offer a HR2x as a SDDVR without the HD Access Fee if you don't have the 5LNB or 3LNB HD Slimline Dish, plus DirecTV could authorize and deauthorize HD channels from the office.

Good to know. If I ever need some extra cash I'll peddle my R22-200 on eBay!! (I don't like the thing anyway and rarely watch it)
