I have a few TVs in my house that are on Comcast expanded basic cable service. Comcast is about to eliminate their analog signal, so I have decided to switch these TVs to satellite. I already have the WB616 multiswitch and internal wiring in place, so all I need to do is add the receivers. My account on D* shows that I can get the standard receiver and the DVR (non HD) for free. It doesn't say which model though. Can you specify the R22? On the standard receivers, is any one model better than the others? Thanks.

You can specify whatever you desire, and you will receive whatever is available. D* doesn't guarantee the delivery of a specific model. All of their STB's are functionally equivalent inside the individual groups (SD Receiver, SD DVR, HD Receiver, HD DVR). All of the SD Receivers are pretty much the same....

With R22s being diverted to MPEG4 only markets getting one in philly might be hard.
I think all the refurbed R22's got diverted to non-MPEG4 markets, at least thats mostly what we get. {sigh}

Isn't the R22 the only non-HD DVR that is networkable?

The R22 has actually been discontinued altogether on upgrades/new installs, so most likely they'll get R16's, since they are in an 101 SD locals markets.
The R22's are now being used mostly to replace existing R22's that break...

My understanding is that even those, are being replaced with R16s.

That would be technically IMPOSSIBLE in MPEG4 markets (such as mine) since the R16 will NOT work on our locals. ;)
In these markets, D* is now starting to install ONLY HD DVR boxes on moves/new installs/upgrades. Matter of fact, I've had a couple clients who's R15/16 boxes crashed & ended up being sent HD DVR replacements - since they already had slimlines, it was like getting a FREE HD upgrade for another set. :)
FWIW, I see NIB R22s selling for reasonable prices on Fleabay. Sample

You are absolutely correct. I was in fact, referring to those areas, that are not MPEG4 only.

As cowart mentions, you could also "purchase" the receiver model you want from ebay or a big box store. Be advised that if you purchase from a big box store, the receiver will be leased. If you purchase via ebay, get the receiver ID number first and confirm with DirecTV if you would be able to activate it. Also check with them as to whether the box will be owned or leased (if you purchase via ebay, you should be getting an owned box as individuals should not be selling the leased boxes).
