Just wondering if anyone knows what types of video will play through mediashare on an HR20 and HR21. It would be nice if I could stream some videos I've encoded on handbrake into m4v's.
FYI, I'm on a mac using EyeConnect. I've heard of some upnp clients that will transcode to MPEG-2 on the fly in order to play but I'm not sure if that's still necessary. I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me.

The only format the DVRs will accept is MPEG2. Anything else needs to be converted or transcoded. The beta version (0.12) of MediaTomb supports transcoding and I believe the latest version of Twonky does also. Both are available for OS X. If you come across a way to transcode with EyeConnect, please post the information.

Thanks for the response. I don't suppose there's any rumors that they'll support MPEG4 any time soon are there? Interesting that they'd only support MPEG2 when MPEG4 is a much better codec that everyone is moving to (even direcTV :) ) You'd have to assume they'd have support eventually.
As for MediaTomb and Twonky, how fast is it at transcoding? Will it bog down my system pretty bad when streaming?

Well, there have been predictions that MPEG4 would be supported since the DVRs already decode that for satellite programming, but nothing has happened yet for Media Share. I haven't tried the recent versions of MediaTomb or Twonky, but I suspect that the dual core Intel Macs could keep up with the load (possibly some of the higher end G5 PPC Macs could also).
