My Zinwell MS worked great, but I needed to move some receivers around and add in a HR20 that I had as part of the HR10-250 swap out (but never activated) and so I picked up a SWM8/PI combination, with a 1x2 splitter.

Got it all hooked up with the existing HR21 and *gasp* the legacy ports connected to a HDVR2 SD unit. All working fine--once I yanked the BBCs from the HR21 and did a set up.

Hooked up the HR20 and found that it failed on 110, but completed the setup with errors. I checked the errors, and told it to continue anyway. Got to the "your guide info will download over the next 24 hours" and no joy with the download of satellite info. Let it run for a couple hours and still no dice.

-yep, no BBCs and connected to SAT 1
-has signal on 101 and a few others (don't recall specifically)
-didn't make a note of the firmware version, but it's probably been on the shelf for upwards of a year. Would connecting it up to the legacy ports and forcing an update maybe do the trick? official SWM support started when for the HR20?

Any hints/ideas on getting by? I'd hate to have to put the Zinwell back on and only use 1 tuner.

Thanks all!

Check your 4 inputs to the SWM8 from the dish (specifically the 110 wire, but I would check them all). Make sure all of the coax wires are tight.

If you have the ability to recrimp the ends, I would consider doing the 110 wire.

Also, for the hell of it, where do you have your power inverter hooked up exactly, and what is on both ends of it?

PI set up is via the diagrams.... PI(red) to SWM8(red), PI(white, IRD) to DTV approved splitter input(red) and the Splitter red output to the HR21 and the white one to HR20.

I'll double check the 4 wires incoming from the dish, the setup worked fine on the HR21, so, perhaps incorrectly, I assumed things would be good for the HR20. I can recrimp with no problem, so perhaps that's a thought as well. Thanks!

Since your HR21 works fine (which I missed the first time - sorry) try switching the HR20 and HR21 port on the SWM splitter, and see if the problem migrates to the HR21 or remains on the HR20.

So just to confirm: The HR21 works fine right? Problem is just on the HR20? If I remember correctly the HR20 needs up-to-date software to function correctly with SWM, so you probably just need to hook it up to the legacy ports of your SWM-8 to allow the software download to happen.

If you can also post how everything is interconnected on your setup (be specific) we can possibly narrow down anything in that loop...

Doesn't sound like a cabling problem then unless the line from the splitter to the HR20 is damaged/defective. I'd try updating the software since the DVR's version is likely pretty old...

I thought that was the H20? Either way, do a software update anyway. And as long as it's getting a signal from 101, no need to swap cables around for the software update (It comes from 101).

This kind of sounds like a bad "refurb" HR20, "if" the HR21 is working fine, and the cable to the HR20 is good.
Recheck the HR21 SAT & SWM levels, then reboot the HR20 and try a download. Check the HR20 SAT & SWM levels and if it still has errors, I'd be leaning towards a bad receiver.

Do you have a 5lnb dish, or a 3 lnb.

check the rcvr that is working and see what kind of dish it's set to, and make sure the HR20 is set to the same dish.

update:

So I get home, and fire up the TV and HR20, just for fun. Since I'd already done the setup and all, it just went through the startup and the "satellite info" started coming down! Didn't change a thing--other than reboot the darn thing. (Question...does Microsoft do the D* Software? :) )

Channel 100 pops up a minute or 2 later and then I get a big message "NEW SOFTWARE" and I approve the download. 10 minutes later I'm updated, and everything's working. Got D* on the line for activation and it's 100% now. Go figure.

My guess? The old SW was good enough after the restart to get the thing up, then the normal update, etc process occurred.

I appreciate all the suggestions! I'll keep 'em in mind when I fiddle around later on this fall (new wiring, but I'm NOT going in the attic unless I have to).
